Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I am happy to negotiate within reason and to establish a new relationship with a client. I have nearly 10 years of commercial photography and film production experience, over $26,000 of equipment, insurance, and special licensing (FAA Part 107), please understand that my resources and experience are reflected in my pricing.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I like to take a "backwards planning" approach. Begin with the ideal endstate - when does this need to be done? Can it be shot in a studio or on location? Who needs to be involved? Then plan backwards from that point in the future until now. What steps must be taken from my side as a service provider and the client's side as a stakeholder to get us both to the ideal endstate?

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
BS Business Administration - Marketing, emphasis in Data Analysis from University of Colorado Boulder Minor in Technology, Art, and Media Design from University of Colorado Boulder AA Business Administration from Front Range Community College

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I have been taking photos for nearly 20 years. What started as a hobby as a young teen has grown into a full-blown career. The first time I used a camera to make money was in high school -- shooting senior portraits of my classmates. In college I was hired by URBN (parent company of Urban Outfitters and Free People) and got real-world exposure to fashion photography. I was then recruited by Universal Music Group in Los Angeles, who hired me onto their internal content team that created media to promote albums and tours for the artists under the UMG labels. After a year of working the grind in the music industry, I decided to go freelance, and have been working for myself ever since.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I have done direct video and photo work for clients such as the NFL, Peyton Manning/Omaha Productions, Birkenstock, and Hoka. These "household name" clients are always a fun experience, but I also love doing work for smaller and medium sized brands and organizations just as equally, it feels like my work has a more direct impact the smaller the client is.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Freelance photography and videography services is a highly saturated market. It is also a market in which the "you get what you pay for" saying rings true. Pay attention to the depth of experience (variety and length) in freelancers in this market.
