Introduction

I've been doing award-winning (over 20 local, national and international awards) commercial and architectural photography for over 30 years. My clients include major corporations like Turner Broadcasting, General Electric, The Home Depot, and many others, as well as small businesses. Many real estate/ architectural photographers use a process called HDR. It can be a great tool when combined with other Photoshop techniques. It can also be used alone for producing a large quantity of photos in the quickest amount of time. Relying on HDR is perfect for low to medium budget real estate photography. However, if you're looking for magazine quality photography, I work on each image individually, and sometimes will spend several hours on one image to get the best possible photograph. How did you get started doing this type of work?

My background is in Commercial Photography. For many years I did all of the still photography for most of the television stations in Atlanta, including WSB-TV, CNN and Turner Broadcasting System. I also did commercial work for many large corporations. I sold my studio several years ago, and brought my commercial photography skills into Architectural photography, which I specialize in now.

What types of customers have you worked with?

I've worked with large corporations as well as small businesses. My client list includes Owens Corning, Delta Airlines, General Electric, Turner Broadcasting Systems, The Atlanta Falcons, ABC-TV, CBS, Dupont, Coca-Cola, IBM, The Home Depot, CNN, Nokia, Tribune Entertainment, as well as architectural and design clients such as Sterling Trust, Atlantic Realty, The Lane Company, Colliers Spectrum Cauble, Peacock Interiors, Havertys Furniture, and Atlanta Fine Homes/Sotheby's International Realty. My work has appeared in publications including: The New York Times, USA Today, Newsweek, National Geographic, Audubon Magazine, Town and Country Magazine, Sports Illustrated and TV Guide. My subjects have ranged from President George Bush to yak herders in Tibet. I'm the author of the book, How To Take Photos That Move Houses, An Easy-Reading Guide for Real Estate Agents, Brokers, Architects, Designers, & anyone who needs to show a property in its best light. and I've been a speaker at the International Medical Volunteerism Conference at Emory University. I'm currently a part time instructor at the Portfolio Center in Atlanta, Georgia, teaching architectural and commercial photography.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I recently photographed the new Ronald McDonald house in Atlanta. It's really more like a hotel than a house, and was designed by Randy Maxwell with Perkins + Will Architects. It's an amazing building, with a stylized treehouse as its core. The project took about a week to photograph, and several days of Photoshop. My website has a few of the photos from this project.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Make sure that you are comparing apples to apples, and don't go by price alone. If you're looking for low and medium budget photography, many photographers will use a process called HDR which automates the post production. This works well for most real estate photography. If you want magazine quality work, look for a photographer that works on each image individually, to give you the best possible look for every photo.
