Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
- My pricing reflects the project's scope and complexity together with an estimate of the time required to complete it. - My prices are competitive with professional rates for similar work. - There are no discounts or hidden fees.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
1- I ask the client to describe their vision for the Project. 2- I show the client the actual camera views as the camera session proceeds. 3- When the images are delivered, I make sure the client's expectations have been met.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I earned a Bachelor of Science in Design from the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning where I studied photography under a world class professional.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I began doing photography with my father, an amateur photo buff, who took his camera with him wherever he went. We developed film and made contact prints at night in the family farm's milk house. I then pursued photography as a hobby until seven years ago when my wife challenged me to make it a full-time profession.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
- Architects - Interior Designers - Engineers - Art Directors - Marketing Directors - Business Owners - Restauranteurs - Manufacturers - Homebuilders - Developers - Private Homeowners - Commercial Real Estate Brokers - Residential Real Estate Agents - Writers and Editors - Publishers - Artists

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
A favorite project was being invited to Las Vegas to photograph historic private railroad cars, each outfitted with the grandest custom accoutrements of its time. One had provided living quarters for mining executives and their staff while traveling the old west visiting company properties. The other car had once belonged to Buffalo Bill Cody and contained personal quarters for Annie Oakley and Teddy Roosevelt. This project took three days of camera work, with another three days of post-processing and editing.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Some people think it's quick and easy to produce digital images, when in fact it takes time to set-up each shot to get just the right angle and lighting. Professional photos are not snapshots. A professional shoot can take hours, even days. Processing the images afterward usually takes at least as long as the camera work. Keep in mind that when you hire a professional photographer, you are hiring a combination of both an artist and a scientist who will work hard to deliver the best your subject has to offer.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Determine what you want: - How many images do you need? - How and where will your images be used? Internet or print? - When will you need the final images? In what format? - Do you have examples of photos that best represent your vision? Then, check-out various photographers' on-line portfolios and contact the ones who are best-suited for your project. Their answers will help you to narrow the field to the one you would most like to work with.
