I majored in visual communication at The Ohio State University. I am also an art director of 20 years and an internationally-published music journalist; but a photographer first. Becoming a people person, capturing the perfect composition, mastering the technical aspects of the camera, creating an artistic style of retouching, comes from years of experience of engaging with people on both sides of the camera.

I started off as a designer, and through word of mouth, I've had the luxury of expanding my portfolio to include photography. My employer saw my photographs and was essential and supportive of my photography business.

I've done commercial photography with the Ford Motor Company, and candid photography with complete strangers. Every day is a new adventure, which helps me keep things fresh.

I'm fond of every project I've had. I learn about the good in people and challenge myself with every assignment.

On one end, you get people who have a camera, but don't understand composition, lighting, or editing. On the other side of the spectrum, you get cookie cutter photographers who specialize in a certain skillset, but having nothing more to offer. Every shot looks the same from session to session. The more varied types of photography they can provide, the more they will be apt to developing a creative solution for your needs. With photography, it is all about the desired end result—stunning, engaging, and memorable photography. Keep all of this in mind when researching and pricing your next photographer. Ask questions. If something seems off, it probably is.

Ask to see their portfolio outside of Thumbtack and look for plenty of reviews. The more reviews you can read, the more helpful it will be to see how dependable and professional your photographer will be for your project.
