Introduction

Fernando has 15 years of experience serving many varied types of photography clients throughout the Philadelphia metro, New Jersey, Delaware, and Baltimore areas as well as traveling nationwide. Fernando is also the president of the Philadelphia chapter of The American Society of Media Photographers. My job allows me to meet and visit lots of amazing different places and interesting people. One day I might be inside of a doctor's exam room, the next in a warehouse filled with catalytic convertors, and the next inside the office of the president of a local university.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
A lot of different variables go into pricing a photography assignment and it is not fair to the client or the photographer to start the conversation naming a "day rate." Some of the variables that affect cost have to do with the number of images needed, the complexity of the shots, if an assistant (or multiple) assistants are required, and how the client plans to use the images. I always try to set up at least a quick phone call with a new client to discuss their needs and how I can help them.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
With a new client I always like to start by chatting over the phone to learn as much as possible about what their needs are as well as how they plan to use the images. After the initial discussion I can provide them with an estimate and sometimes it makes sense to schedule a face to face meeting. Having as much information about the project at front as possible allows me to completely plan and bring all the resources I need on the day of the shoot. This previous preparation helps ensure that things go smoothly during the shoot and that we accomplish all the client's goals.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I hold a Bachelor's degree in photography from the Art Institute of Photography as well as having 15 years of experience working in the field.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Photography has always been my passion, from the age of 4. After taking a detour to chase "a real career" in Engineering and Informations Technology I came back to photography. I am fortunately to have been able to build a career and a livelihood out of something that I am very passionate about.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I routinely work with many different types of clients from commercial real estate, to healthcare firms, as well as publications and universities.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Recently I was fortunately to visit a local athletic club for a construction client and photograph some of their people interacting and working at the job site. I was able to photograph the superintendent and project manager reviewing plans, electricians and carpenters working, and a small team installing new squash courts. My assistant and I spent half a day on site working with minimal gear and nimbly moving in and out of a handful of spaces shooting the crew working and also setting up some interactions specifically for the benefit of the camera.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
If possible take the time to weigh several options and find a photographer you can trust to take on your assignment. Specially if it is a larger project, it is important that you can be confident that person can carry the whole project.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
It is really helpful when the client has a shot list (a list of the specific shots they need) or a list of things that they need to illustrate for their website, brochure, or article. Also, it can be useful to know how the images will be used -- will the images be solely for use on their website, will they be used in social media, will they illustrate an article, are they to be used in printed advertising, online ads, etc.
