Introduction

I think my people skills set me apart from other photographers. My goal is to make sure that clients receive a fantastic experience as well as fantastic photographs. When shooting special events, I try to use a range of techniques, including portrait compositions to capture a level of intimacy in even the busiest settings and craziest parties. Portraits are my passion. I think it’s worth taking the time to let the subject get comfortable in the shooting space. That’s when personalities really shine.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I understand that everyone has a budget, so I try to be fair with my pricing. Also, my standard agreement automatically includes 30 days of follow-up. So if you call me two weeks later looking for a specific shot...not worries.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I like to get a little background about the event. I once shot a wedding where the couple had set out bottles of sand. I had to ask. It turns out they were bottles of sand from their respective home towns, and the ceremony included pouring the sands into one vessel as a symbol of unity. So I made sure I captured this as it played out. Feel free to share the details.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
My first academic photography experiences date back to the early 90's, where I learned composition and developing images in a darkroom. Getting the right shot in the pre-digital days was a pain-staking process, but it taught me to be patient with the subject.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started where a lot of photographers probably start...shooting special occasions for friends and families. Let's just say I've seen my share of Quinceañeras.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I've worked with large groups, weddings, corporate Christmas parties...you name it. I love the intimacy of small gatherings, but the energy of larger groups can also be a lot of fun.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I recently shot a wedding where there were six people...including me. It was by far the smallest event I've ever shot, but it was an absolutely wonderful experience. It took less than two hours. But sometimes it's not the quantity of time, it's what you do with it.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
For anyone shopping around for an event photographer, I would highly recommend actually speaking with the individual who will be shooting your event. What kind of vibe do you get from them? Outside of funerals, most events are joyous celebratory occasions, so you want a photographer that "gets the mood" and can run with it. Technical skills rarely compensate for a sulking killjoy behind the camera. No matter who you go with, make sure you find a photographer that always packs an extra smile in the gear-bag.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Make sure you clarify what type of access you'll have to the images. Will the photographer only sell you the prints or will the pictures be available to me and my guests for downloads? Some photographers may copyright the images, add watermarks, and/or limit the scope of use, even for the event planner. I believe the images of you and your guests at your special event are, well...yours. But whichever professional you chose, if you want the event images to be available for download or posting to social media, clarify that on the front-end.
