Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Typically, basic commercial services are billed out at $280/hour plus expenses. Architectural and food work bill out at 1/2 Day and Full Day rates plus expenses. All other projects are billed at our $280/hour rate, with a 2-hour minimum.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
The basis of any good business relationship is communication and honesty. We take the time to sit down with our clients, and really listen to what their requirements and expectations are. We then honestly assess the information we've been given, and provide price estimates and suggestions based on that information. As we proceed through the course of a project, we clearly communicate any issues, concerns, or challenges that arise so that they can be handled quickly and effectively.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I've been a full-time professional photographer for over 45 years, with thousands of satisfied clients, and a rich portfolio of national-quality work.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Funny story. When I first got married, a million years ago it seems, my new father-in-law was a photographer who was ready to retire. He took me under his wing, and taught me much of what I know about photographic technique.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Most of our clients are Fortune 50 and Fortune 500 clients... we do hospitality work for Marriott, Hilton, and IHG, and have shot for Mitsubishi Motors, Bank of America, and Glanbia USA, among many others. We typically work with builders, architects, interior designers, realtors, restaurants, food service companies, and advertising agencies.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
We recently returned from NYC, which I dearly love. There is an energy to the city that isn't found anywhere else... we photographed a hotel across the river in New Jersey, and have around 20 more properties to shoot in NYC proper throughout the next 2 years.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Portfolio, portfolio, portfolio. Look for someone who clearly has the expertise to get the job done right, and who has clearly done the job before. Architectural and food photography, as well as many other types of commercial work, require specific equipment and expertise to do correctly. For instance, if you are looking to do architectural or real estate photography, look for someone that works with a tilt-shift lens to control perspective.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
The biggest disconnect that I routinely see is that budgets do not match reality. The fact that there are 2000 "mommytographers" or MWC's (Moms With Cameras) who will certainly agree to do your job for $25 doesn't mean that your budget should be $25. It simply means that there are a LOT of people out there who will say... and promise... anything for a quick buck. The wisest clients I know will take advantage of a free sit-down consultation with a photographer with a proven resume and experience, and listen to what is really required to do a given job correctly, and then form their budget around that.
