Q&A

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
My typical process with a new client starts with a thorough consultation. I always recommend bringing a reference photo of the makeup look you’d like to achieve. This is because everyone interprets makeup differently—what one person considers a “natural look” might feel more like “glam” to someone else. The photo helps me establish a clear starting point for your customized look. I will also assess your skin type and consider your skin concerns. Based on the needs of your skin, I will start to prep your skin for your makeover and possibly suggest some skincare. After we’ve defined your desired style and prepped your skin, we’re ready to dive into your makeover. I usually begin with the eyes to allow for easy cleanup, then move on to perfecting your complexion. From there, I’ll finish with contouring, lips, and setting spray to complete and lock in your look. During each phase, I will walk you through what I’m doing and ask for your approval that way we are working on this together. Clients are encourage to ask all the questions as this is also a good learning experience for you! The goal is to ensure you feel comfortable, confident, and flawless!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
My artistry foundation was built during my time with Smashbox, where I worked as an Artistry Trainer long before YouTube tutorials became popular. As part of the role, I was regularly flown to Smashbox headquarters for Master Classes led by industry icons like Pearce, now the Global Artist for Selena Gomez’s makeup line, and Lori Taylor, the current Global Trainer for Smashbox. These sessions emphasized mastering complexion—perfecting color matching, adding warmth, contouring, and understanding textures. This experience shaped my expertise and continues to influence my approach to makeup artistry today.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
In 2006, I entered the world of makeup after struggling to find an artist who could match my complexion or enhance my eye shape (and honestly, I still can’t!). Determined to solve this for myself, I dove into learning color theory and practiced relentlessly until I mastered it—all before YouTube tutorials were even a thing! Along the way, I discovered I wasn’t alone—so many women were caught in the same frustrating cycle of buying and trying without results. Over the past 13 years, it has become my passion and purpose to be the trusted makeup artist they’ve been searching for. Makeup has not only been my craft but also a way to give back to my community.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
We have worked with people of all ages and backgrounds. Our scope of work is not limited to wedding and editorial projects. We've done men's "makeup" grooming, dance recital makeup, and themed party makeup. We fully support and love the Rainbow Community.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
The most recent project was a photo shoot for a retired model, Karen Pope. She is returning to the scene to hopefully become Victoria Secret's first silver-haired angel. Her daughter is an up-and-coming model who's already walked in Paris Fashion Week at only 16 years old. It was such a pleasure to work with this mother-daughter duo. The project lasted 6 hours. We did 12 wardrobe changes. Our next project will be at MIMI's Bridal Fashion Show in San Jose at the end of the month!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
• Complexion is Key: Choose a makeup artist who truly understands undertones. Not everyone has an olive complexion, and finding someone who can match your skin tone perfectly is essential. • Patience Matters: Your makeup artist should be patient and communicative, creating a comfortable and collaborative experience for you. • Invest in Touch-Up Essentials: Keep a small kit with powder, concealer, blush, lipstick or lip gloss, and a brow pencil. These products are your go-to for staying fresh throughout the day. Ask your makeup artist to show you how to use them effectively. • Lashes are a Must: A great set of lashes can take your look to the next level!

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
