Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
A $25 deposit is required to book a makeup session.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I like to have a phone conversation with my client first to understand their needs and see if we are a good fit for each other. I require a $25 deposit to book. The day before or morning of I will text my client to confirm their appointment. I arrive to my appointments 15 minutes early to have time to setup and have another discussion with my client to confirm their desired look. A regular makeup job usually takes me an hour to complete, however for bridal or unique jobs such as photoshoots or special effects makeup, the job duration can go over an hour.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I've taken online courses as well as private lessons taught by other professional makeup artists. I'm constantly looking for courses and educational materials to stay updated on makeup artistry.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I've always been inspired by makeup since high school. I did makeup for my friends for prom. When I was in college, I became a Mary Kay Sales Consultant but later realized my passion was makeup artistry instead of sales. Therefore, I decided to become a professional freelance makeup artist.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
My clients are all ages and races. I've worked with clients as young as 13 and as old as 80. I do natural makeup for professional photos and special occasions. I've done bold glamour makeup with dramatic lashes and colors for special events, such as photoshoots, birthdays and proms. I've created looks with glitter and stones. I've also done special effects makeup for Halloween.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
My most recent project was makeup for a 50th birthday party. My client was a returning client. She typically went for a soft natural look, however for her birthday she wanted a look that was a bit more glamorous but still soft. She trusted that I would be able to accomplish her desired look. I created a beautiful soft glowy look for her with a smokey eye and a glossy nude lip. We decided to go with a little highlight on her cheeks to make her skin look youthful and bright. And I choose the perfect wispy lashes to give her sexy and dreamy eyes. She was absolutely satisfied with the results.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
I would give a customer the advice of before hiring a pro makeup artist, that it is important to review their work. The looks that they have created are they the type of looks you desire. I would say always have a brief discussion with the artist first to confirm they are a good fit. How professional are they? Are they polite? Get a fill for your artist. You'll be spending an hour or two with them in your face. Ask them about their pricing, deposits and cancellation policy. I would advise a customer to discuss what type of products they currently use. I would advise them to discuss allergies. It's also very important to skin type, such as dry, normal or oily.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
The customer should know what type of look they are wanting to accomplish. Pictures from magazines or that potential artist's previous work is a great idea to have. The customer should have a budget and know how much they are willing to pay. The customer should think about where they feel comfortable getting their makeup done. Do they have a clean and spacious environment for their artist to work in to create the best look for them. It is also wise for the customer to consider timing. How early do they need to be at their event or engagement to insure that their artist does not need to rush.
