Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Your quoted price includes design time and sketches, consultation and qll materials. No weird hourly charges, your quoted price is ALL INCLUSIVE! I am currently offering murals starting at $17/square foot (no more than $22/sq ft), with discounts for larger pieces over 100 sq ft. Window painting is less expensive. For collaborative projects (with school groups, oeganization participation, etc) I charge my base price per square foot plus a teaching fee of $5-10/square foot.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Consultation is free! Let's find a time to talk on the phone, in person or virtually. When you message me on Thumbtack, send me some photos of the space where you'd like the mural. Dimensions are important, as is information about the condition and texture of the wall. If you have an idea of what you're looking for, attach some inspiration photos too! I can provide you an estimate via message (typically a price range). We will talk about your ideas for the space, and I will provide you with a firm quote reflecting your desire for the space. If you decide to work with me, you will pay a deposit (25% of the project cost). Your deposit pays for design time/sketches and materials. If you lead a school or youth organization, talk to me about facilitating mural creation for your youth. I am also happy to work with your child to design and execute a mural for their room. This is an empowering process for young people to participate in and can make your space truly unique and reflective of your school or organization. Discounts provided for murals for non profits organizations or schools.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I am a former secondary school teacher and remain a licensed therapist. Full time mural painting is a career pivot for me, though I have always been an artist and have engaged in art making as both an undergraduate and a graduate student. My Masters in Art Therapy is from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition to the therapist training I received there, I had to maintain an independent art practice and fulfill art course requirements at the art school. I am a great listener and collaborator, and good at making your vision and desires for your space a reality!

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I've always been an artist, I just haven't given it my full attention until recently. I've been a public school educator and a mental health service provider for the last 20 years (!) These roles have provided me ongoing opportunity to work with youth and facilitate youth-led mural projects while working as a therapist and educator. I am so excited to have pivoted to full-time artist- this allows me to fully pursue a long-held passion whole heartedly! While I enjoy making custom art for people's homes and businesses, working with schools and organizations to create collaborative, community centered work is what I am most excited about.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Homeowners, schools and small business owners. My technical skills make me a good fit to create a piece of art that will help your retail business or restaurant stand out or will bring the creative vision for your home to life!

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I recently completed a full wall (approx. 150 sq feet) in a living room. This project took 6 working days- about 35-40 hours of painting. They wanted to capture the feel of a favorite place- Joshua Tree National Park. The full wall mural really immerses you in the space- you feel like you are hiking in Joshua Tree during a super bloom! Another fantastic recent project was a ceiling mural capturing the underwater world of the Indian Ocean. This project took 20-25 hours. The customer was a former underwater photographer and shared their own images for me to use in the design of the finished ceiling.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Make sure you like the painter's style and that your design goals are within their skill set. Ask questions up front and don't be afraid to give feedback about design before you get started- it's your custom mural, you should feel happy and comfortable with it. Find out what the price quotes entails- for example- will you get design sketches before the artist begins? (You do with me! I don't do any hourly charges- your mural cost is all inclusive) If you want to to hire someone to lead a youth or group project, or support your child with creating a mural- find out what skills the artist has to do so. Being a good artist doesn't necessarily make you a great teacher. I'm a former teacher and current licensed therapist and I've spent my entire professional career working with teens, so I've got the skills to not only paint, but to lead a group.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
How big is the space where you'd like the mural? What is your budget? What types of art do you like? Screenshots or a google folder of murals, paintings, or even favorite photographs that you found online are great and help the artist to know what you are looking for. What mood are you hoping that the piece will have? Is there an inspiration piece or a type of art you are hoping to emulate? Is it going to be in a relaxing space, do you want your piece to communicate energy and fun in a lively bar? Painting and color can absolutely communicate different feelings.
