I am Monika Lea Jones, the owner of Hairpin Finishing, a company that can execute your vision from start to finish! I learned my trade through the film as a set decorator and as a designer of museum exhibits. I focus on fine finishes that create a mood for your space. This includes interior painting, murals, wallpaper, texturing, plastering and faux finishing. I also create custom art installations and interactive art. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

The more information you can provide the better I can estimate and the quicker we can move from a price range to an exact quote.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

You let me know what you are seeking. I will consult with you and ask questions about size, scale and level of detail. It is helpful if you also provide sample images or photos of the space at this point. I will send you a price estimate, including labor, materials and any rentals such as scaffolding. I ask for a deposit to have the materials ready for the job after the estimate is confirmed. Next I show up with my tools and supplies, prepare the space and get to work!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I was trained in painting by union painters for film and theater. We did a lot of specialty painting like washes to age the sets and make them look more realistic and lived in. As an exhibits specialist at museums I designed and created hands on exhibit furniture, applied large scale vinyl and all manner of commercial painting and repairs.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

I have been working in homes as a subcontractor after moving back to Colorado in 2020. I love applying my diverse skills to the art of making a house a home through remodeling!

What types of customers have you worked with?

Custom murals for homes and businesses. Vinyl decal design and application. Color consultation and Feng Shui art. Museum-style interactive art and installation. Personalized art projects and products. Application of wallpaper, grass cloth, pasted, pre-pasted, peel and stick. Wall textures with plaster. Faux finishing and washes.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I designed an mural for a home gym. We discussed the space and some ideas, did some research and styles and I provided some inspiration images. The digital image was a design I could project and I painted it in three colors. We kept the design bold and simple. I used a portable projector to replicate the image of an eagle in beast mode with the clients favorite colors. I was able to execute it within two days!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Send dimensions, photos of the space and of the exact product or style of finish you want. I will need manufacturers specifications for wallpaper.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

How big? What materials? What style? How detailed?
