Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I provide a full project quote rather than charging by the hour, so all pricing is upfront with no surprises. If you have a budget in mind, let me know, and I’ll do my best to work within it without compromising quality.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I start with an in-person visit to provide an upfront quote and discuss your project. I’m happy to help with color or product selections, and once everything is set, I’ll get you on the schedule. You’ll receive an estimated timeline, so there are no surprises. After completion, I always return for touchups if anything needs additional attention.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I’ve been painting for about a decade, starting in college and eventually owning and operating my own painting company. I managed a team of several painters for a few years and completed an immense amount of residential and commercial projects, gaining hands-on experience across a variety of jobs. I later launched a startup that developed quoting tools specifically for paint contractors. While I now work primarily in business consulting, painting remains a passion, and I continue to take on projects as a side hustle. I also hold a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship from Iowa State University, which helps me bring a professional approach to every job.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I got started in painting while studying business at Iowa State University, where I took a part-time job as a painter. That hands-on experience sparked my interest in the trade and prompted me to launch my own painting company, which I grew over the course of several years. After a successful run in the painting business, I transitioned out of the trade and launched a technology startup focused on helping homeowners and contractors quote painting projects online. After exiting the startup, I returned to painting on the side while now primarily operating my business consulting company.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Today, my focus is primarily on residential projects, as I work as a solo painter. However, I have experience with a wide range of painting projects, including interior painting of all kinds, exterior painting for both small and large homes, deck staining, trim work, floor coatings, and more. In fact, one of my largest projects was painting an entire 250-room hotel.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Recently, I’ve completed a few residential projects that stand out. One was a ranch home where I painted the entire exterior, including a detached garage, in just 2 1/2 days. Another was an interior project, where I repainted the main floor of a home, completing it in a single day of work. Both projects were great examples of efficient, high-quality work done on a tight timeline.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
I’d recommend hiring someone small who’s doing the work themselves. In this industry, larger companies often subcontract the work, meaning the person or company you thought you were hiring might not be the one actually doing or overseeing the job. While experience and skill are crucial, it’s also important to find someone you connect with personally. A good working relationship makes the process smoother and ensures open communication throughout the project.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Customers should definitely have a budget in mind before starting conversations with professionals. A trustworthy contractor will work with you to meet that budget, rather than trying to upsell or take advantage of the information. Being clear about your budget from the start helps ensure you find a contractor who respects your financial limits and can deliver quality work within them.
