Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I usually give the total price for the mural and don't change it, unless the customer wants to make significant modifications. For most stenciling jobs, or repeated patterns, or specific faux finishes on furniture, I charge $40-$60 per hour.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I listen to the customer requests and ideas and then discuss it with the customer and give my suggestions based on my extensive experience. I show my portfolio, especially parts of it that fit the customer's tastes for their home or business interior. We are always able to come to a consensus about what needs to be done. Then I implement the job based on our shared vision.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I studied painting extensively in art school and in a studio specializing in monumental paintings in Europe. I have over two decades of work experience in the USA.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Painting was always my profession. I still remember my first mural. Early in my career, by request of a construction company, I made a mural for a large meeting room. At the time, I was not brave enough to do it right on the wall. So, I implemented two panels, approximately 8'x20'. It was a half-imagined cityscape in orangish-red tones, very intense, and at the same time rhythmic. It was full of the architecture of my dreams, and from time to time, I've embodied it in my murals.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I've worked with all types of customers. Business, private, detail-oriented, and those that just have a general idea, or rely on me to come up with one.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I recently implemented a mural inspired by the Jazz of New Orleans (by way of a Thumbtack referral... thanks Thumbtack!) I did not put it on my website yet, but you can take a peek at "New Orleans Jazz Entertainment Room" in my Thumbtack portfolio. This is a typical example of me working together with a client and sharing ideas. My client, like myself, loves jazz and travel. I painted a background of panoramic, desaturated, documentary-style city streets interspersed with bright, splashy "windows" of jazz players in action. It took about 3 weeks to implement this large project. This mural helped my client to transform an ordinary looking basement into an entertainment room where walls naturally go along with the bar, sofas, pool table, big screen TV, and surround sound system.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Look at the provider's profile on Thumbtack and on artist's own website. If an artist has works accessible in public places it is worth to have a look. As always, look at the referrals and reviews.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
- Describe your idea, don't just say that you have an idea. - Describe the surface. Is it a wall, ceiling, etc. - Have a photo of the space where the mural will be located and know it's rough dimensions / size. - Do you have an inspirational image? - When does the job need to be done? - What is your budget? - Be prepared that the professional will have ideas to suggest to you. - Your desire is most important but sometimes a professional can think about other aspects of the job that a customers can miss. - If the project is located very high up, scaffolding might be needed. That might increase the price. Discuss it with the professional.
