Introduction

Experience and ability; these allow me to create various styles and a high quality mural. I've been working in commercial art throughout my life and have worked as an illustrator for the State of Florida, a graphic designer for Gannett Newspaper, and now I get to create huge works of art...I'm blessed! Meeting new customers and creating new things everyday. One day I'm working on a large mural, and the next week I'm faux finishing. I love variety. And when I'm done, I really enjoy the response of my customers!

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I want to work with customers to stay within budget, so knowing what you have to spend can be very helpful. Once I as a few questions then I'm ready to provide a solid price based on the project. A price based on the project is absolutely the best way to go because the customer knows EXACTLY what the project will cost from the beginning and the price will not change, unless the customer adds or changes the scope of the project.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
First, respond to their request through Thumbtack, and include some samples of my work. I always ask to speak to them by phone, however, text can work but takes more effort for the customer. I like the phone because I can ask my questions quickly, the customer and I can clarify details more concisely, and a quote can be developed very fast. Also, the customer can tell a lot about me during the call based on my demeanor and the quality of questions that I ask.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have a bachelor's degree in art education that includes lots of studio art classes as well as training in art history. Additionally, I have worked as a commercial artist, an illustrator, a draftsman, a theatrical set builder, and a fine artist throughout my life. All of these experiences, coupled with 10 years of mural painting makes me who I am.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
When I was in first grade I used to tape pieces of paper together in art class to create a picture. By the time I was in third grade I was creating works of art as large as 4' tall. I've always loved creating large artwork, and mural painting allows me to do just that.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Residential and commercial murals, including churches, schools, home builders, interior designers, architects, and even cowboys. My customers are looking for hand lettering, small and large murals, faux finishing, 3D objects (e.g. treehouses and crayons), and decorative artwork, like faux and stenciling.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I'm very pleased with a school mural project I just created. The project included a large mural in the library, several hand-painted logos throughout the hallways, and several hand-painted signs. Overall, the project took 6 weeks to complete.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Seek out someone that has talent and someone that you feel comfortable around. Review their portfolio look for artwork that you really appreciate in quality and style. Take a look at the artist' Thumbtack reviews and look for someone that you can be confident in.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
What do I want to accomplish with my mural? What kind of style would I like it painted in? How big do I want my mural? What is my budget?
