Introduction

Horst | Shewmaker Injury Attorneys (Michael Horst and Zach Shewmaker) fight for the rights of accident and injury victims throughout all of Georgia. We founded our firm on two principles: CLIENT SERVICE and RESULTS! To reinforce these principles, H|S Law does not employ case managers. At large law firms, your case is usually handled by case managers. This means someone without a law degree is handling your legal case. From start to finish, every H|S case is personally handled by an experienced lawyer. We founded our firm on the belief that clients hire lawyers, not case managers or legal assistants. And frankly, we believe that a client will never get a just result unless he or she works directly with an experienced lawyer. We represent each and every client the same way we would represent a family member. If you were injured due to the negligence of a company or individual, our accident lawyers will: • File all necessary insurance claims at the onset of your injury case to avoid any delays. • Assist you in obtaining a loan if you need immediate financial assistance. • Help you secure the medical treatment you need and deserve at no up-front cost to you. • Establish your lost wages or loss of earning capacity as a result of your injuries (if applicable). • Retain experts needed for your accident claim at no up-front cost to you (if necessary). • Negotiate the highest possible personal injury settlement offer we can obtain.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
We work on a contingency fee, which means we do not get paid until or unless our client gets paid. The details of the fee appear in our attorney-client contract, which each client signs before we start working on the case.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Every new client speaks with one of our attorneys to provide basic information about the client's claim. Each client gets the attorney's direct phone number and cell phone number so that client always has access to us. We typically open a file within 30 minutes of a client hiring us, then one of our skilled legal assistants will complete process during a call with the new client.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
We have more than 36 years of combined legal experience. Our attorneys trained under the best defense attorneys in the state prior to becoming plaintiffs' attorneys. We have handled and resolved tens of millions of dollars worth of cases through settlements, mediations and trials.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Michael has been practicing law since 2001. Zach has been practicing law since 2006. For many years, our practice focused on representing companies and insurers in personal injury actions. Our specialty was defending truck drivers, motor carriers, and their insurers. We enjoyed the legal work but the cases’ results often left us empty and unfulfilled. We ultimately transformed our practice. Instead of representing companies and insurers, we changed to filing lawsuits against them. We now enjoy being part of the solution instead of one of the many obstacles standing between the injured person and just compensation.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
We primarily work with people injured in car wrecks or truck wrecks in Georgia. We also work with people injured in slip and falls, work place injuries, dog attacks, and other incidents caused by the negligent acts or omissions of other individuals or corporations.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
We have two particularly difficult cases involving drivers injured by negligent truck drivers. We have spent years working on these cases to make sure no stone goes unturned, and we have added value to each case through persistent and diligent work as we prepare for trial.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Hire someone you trust. Hire an attorney who speaks with you. Do not hire an attorney who has a non-attorney staff member contact you about your case. And make sure the attorney you hire doesn't turn your case over to a staff member right after you sign the attorney-client agreement. That's what big plaintiff "mill" firms do, and we get a lot of those clients once they realize how poorly they're being represented.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Every client should ask any attorney they hire who will be handling the case and how often will that attorney (NOT the staff member) communicate with me. Attorney-client communication, consistent and frequent communication, is crucial to the success of every case.
