Introduction

With over 20 years of in-home personal training experience, I have helped hundreds of people of all ages and abilities. My career in fitness has centered around providing the convenience of working out at home and dispensing creative strategies to help set and achieve goals. All of my clients have a lot to juggle - from successful careers to an active family and social life. Having a personal trainer provides you with a "nudge" to make sure you are prioritizing your own wellness alongside other important commitments. As a wife and working mom to two young children, I know the daily challenges can feel endless. I love helping my clients tackle their own challenges and provide them with positive reinforcement when their battery is drained. I have many long-term clients, from ages 11 to 91 years old who are happy to attest to my professionalism by providing a quality reference to potential new clients. My experience also extends to working with individuals who have chronic and serious health conditions that require specialized, modified routines that help to build strength, stamina and increase their sense of wellness.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
My personal training fee is competitive with the region's top trainers. For in-home personal training clients, subject to change based on location, my fee is $85/hour, which includes drive time and an hour workout.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I offer a complimentary meeting to each of my clients. We discuss your goals, health history, fitness background and expectations for the first session. Our first workout includes a 15-20 minute fitness assessment that can include the following: circumference measurements, aerobic test, strength test, flexibility and balance. With your assessment results, we will discuss findings and talk about risk markers. This allow me to individualize workouts suited to your strengths and weaknesses.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have a four year Bachelor's Degree in an Exercise Science-related field. I have been a Certified Personal Trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine since 2008 and also have a certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Golf Fitness Specialist. I have completed hundreds of hours of continuing education in the last 10 years and continue to build upon my experience.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I switched fields of study several times during my first year of college. When I discovered that my college had an "Exercise Science" option in their Physical Education department, a bell went off immediately. I have been an athlete since I was able to walk. I competed in many sports and signed on to run cross country and track in college, only to continue endurance sports after graduating. After enduring years of physical activity, I fully understand the importance of physical wellness and the impact it has on day to day living.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I have worked with ages 11 to 92. I currently train 21 people in the Kansas City area at work or in their home. Some of my clients are young, working professionals, and many are in their retirement years. I work with healthy individuals, as well as others who have some complications, such as heart disease, arthritis, joint replacement, COPD, among a few others. I enjoy working with my clients who do not have any fitness restrictions, but I love seeing the change in the sense of well-being in my clients who need a high level of attention in order to improve their chronic conditions.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
A few months ago, I started with a retired man who is very fit. His only complaint was that he had a "twinge" in one of his legs, most likely from sciatica due to a compressed nerve in his lower back. After about a month of tweaking his fitness program, he has reported that his twinge has subsided and he feels stronger and has better balance than he has had in several years.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Hiring a personal trainer can be a very rewarding experience. Kansas City has a very competitive fitness market, so be sure to interview several trainers. Hire trainers who you immediately feel comfortable with, who are clear about how each session with you will go, and have them identify how they intend to track progress to achieve your goals. It is wise to collect at least one reference who you can call and check up on their history as a trainer. Are they on time? Easy to work with? Accommodating to your schedule?

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
What is your educational background? How many years of experience do you have? Through which professional and accredited organizations are you a certified personal trainer? What is your cancellation policy? Do you perform a fitness assessment? How do you track progress toward my goals? Have you worked with other clients who have similar goals as I do?
