Fear wasn’t something I felt; it was something I lived in, something that wrapped around me so tightly I almost forgot I could move. Violence wasn’t an occasional storm—it was the air I breathed. My mother’s hands, fists, belts—whatever she could grab—landed without warning, without pattern, without mercy. I learned early that pain didn’t come with explanations. At home, I tried to stay still, to disappear. On the streets, I was hunted for being too light-skinned to belong, but too brown to escape the hate. Fear whispered its lies: ❌ Don’t move. ❌ Don’t fight back. ❌ You’ll only make it worse. And I believed it. Until the day I didn’t. I was standing at the window of our third-floor apartment, looking down at Marcy Place and Jerome Avenue, when I saw her—my little sister, just 9 years old, lying on the pavement. Three girls surrounded her, kicking and shoving her like she was a toy they didn’t want. And no one moved to help.
