Introduction

I’m a registered architect based in New Mexico who just can’t stop photographing projects and people. I received a Masters of Architecture from the University of Arizona and practiced for 6 years in a Tucson design / build firm before relocating to the Yucatán peninsula, and I’m currently practicing at an Albuquerque architectural firm. Having dual functioned as architect and general contractor, I understand the intricacies of both design and construction. It’s my passion to capture and convey these moments through photos. Portraiture allows me to show people in their best light, emphasizing the essence of the person while showcasing their profession, interests or personality. The human element of photography reminds us each of who we are and what makes us that person. Let’s show the world both.

Q&A

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Every project is unique, so it’s important for me to understand early on which aspects of the design the client would like to emphasize. I appreciate a candid discussion of the design and construction process as well as the ability to review relevant floor plans, elevations, sections and any other process renderings that the designer is willing to share. Once we’ve had a chance to discuss the design itself and photography goals, I’ll walk the client through a proposed workflow for the day (or days) of shoot and provide an example contract for their review. If possible, I always prefer to conduct a site visit prior to photographing a project to have a thorough understanding of the built design’s relationship to both site and ambient lighting conditions. I welcome the designer to join us for either a portion or the entirety of the job as I know how crucial (and gratifying) it is to see the project captured exactly as it should be.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I’m a registered and practicing architect and LEED AP - I’ve spent years in both design and project management. That being said, my eye for architectural composition and attention to detail is the result of a thorough understanding of the process.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
My introduction to photographing built works came via a combination of architectural practice and construction management. I already had a love of portrait and travel photography, and the natural progression was to start capturing projects that I was on as either architect or project manager. It didn’t take long before I realized it was a perfect fit.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I’ve worked with both architects and general contractors to ensure projects are photographed in an elegant manner that conveys the inherent character and constructive detailing of the designs.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Architectural photographers should have not only an understanding of the technical documentation aspect of the job, but also an appreciation for the design intent. Light and shadow, massing, alignment, balance, entourage and detail are all elements that when properly captured through photo, convey the unique nature of a project.
