How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
My dad will always remember me taking over the entire basement as my office and studio when I was 16. It was a great time to start learning the business. I really started as a photojournalist with my high school newspaper and yearbook. I excelled in learning from other photographers in the industry and slowly progressed into a portrait/event photographer. After acquiring more professional equipent and attended Winona Professional School of Photography in Chicago and trained under the nations leading portrait and event photographers in their studios. I eventually found a space on in Wichita and started my professional career from there. After 20 years my studio is a 1500 sq foot Work/Live studio loft in the Art District. Being right in the heart of it all makes me feel really great and my photography even better.

What types of customers have you worked with?

You name it I've done it. Traveling at 150+ mph in another aircraft with doors off of another aircraft, I photographed aircraft "air to air" in all types of conditions for Beechcraft, magazine/editorial photography for the national magazine the "Marketeer" and others, photographing special events all over the US for Callaway Golf, T-Mobile, AT&T, and Wichita's own KOCH Enterprises, and of course weddings, family, couple, individuals, and high school seniors. Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
A storybook wedding in the British Virgin Islands. A tranquil and peaceful place close to the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. I traveled there for 7 days for a clients rehearsal dinner and of course the beach wedding plus pictures of their private sailing ventures.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Don't let uncle Harry do it! I hear time and time again of the bride and family that wish they would have used a professional for the portraits. It's a little too late after the event. Hire a full time professional with an actual studio location and is a member of the Kansas and Professional Photographers of America. KPPA and PPA.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
1. Experience and training. So many pop up photographers working part time. Of course they'll be less just starting out. Experience is the key to great images. Pay a bit more and get the quality you deserve. Professional photographers start at $375 per hour and occasionally less depending on the schedule and time of year. 2.
