Introduction

Nice to meet you - I’m Joey Rushfield! I am a 25-year-old portrait and wedding photographer from Rockville, MD. I have done photography for clients since 2017, and I have no intention of slowing down! Portrait photography is my specialty, but I also love photographing weddings and mitzvahs, all with a fast turnaround time, about half the length of industry standards. My style tends to be cinematic with contrast and emotion, so if that’s your jam, we’re a perfect match. I hold degrees in Elementary Education and Digital Photography, with plans to return for an MFA degree. Outside of taking pictures, I am a teacher with professional experience working with children from the ages of 3 through 17. As you can imagine, this comes in handy for portraits of children and family photos! All this talk is making me want to get out there and take more photos… who’s in? Notes for clarity: If you’d like studio portraits, I have a portable setup I can bring to you since I do not currently have a space big enough for full body portraits. For couple and family portraits, we’d be working on location with gorgeous scenery as our backdrop. Please only inquire about studio portraits if you want me to bring the gear to your location. On Thumbtack, I currently only allow inquiries for shorter weddings/events.

Q&A

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
When working with a new customer, I love to chat a bit and set the stage for the photoshoot. I prefer to keep things lighthearted and fun!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I started my formal photography education throughout my high school years before beginning to work for clients. I took a couple of years off during COVID but returned to photography by getting my Bachelor's degree in Digital Photography. I have also worked under excellent mentor photographers who have taught me the ins and outs of working in the real world.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started doing photoshoots with friends throughout high school and received a lot of praise from friends... so I figured, why not share my ability with others? :)

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I have worked with people of all backgrounds. I am an LGBTQ-friendly business and stand firmly against bigotry and discrimination in my personal and professional life.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
My favorite recent project was the photos I took for a couple's engagement. I absolutely loved how they came out. The shoot took about two hours and editing took another four hours or so.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Make sure you are on the same page about the nature of the work you want done. This goes for other professionals, too! Make sure you and your client are aligned on the type of product you want to deliver.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Customers should ponder: What mood and/or theme do I want to capture for my photoshoot? What perspective do I want my photographer to approach our shoot with? For example, for event work, do you prefer photojournalistic/candid photos, or primarily posed and set up shots? Customers should also be sure to read the bio of their photographers to ensure the services they need are offered by the photographer. There can sometimes be details that are specified within a bio.
