Introduction

It's my joy to learn what my clients want their photos to express, and help them accomplish that. I consult with clients prior to a session regarding clothing, props, locations, etc. and spend time during a session directing clients through posing. Although I always arrive with a plan, I work to keep photo sessions fun and incorporate client suggestions. I enjoy helping folks relax & have fun during their session so their photos reflect their authentic personality. I enjoy being creative and like challenges. I am a licensed business based out of Christiansburg, and am registered with the Virginia State Corporation Commission operating as an LLC. I am a member of Professional Photographers of America. I do 90% of my photography in the field, meeting clients at locations in the community they/we select for their photos. I have a 260 sq. ft. studio with an attached bathroom in my home perfect for portraits, headshots, modeling shots, and some types of product/commercial shots. I primarily use green screen technology for backdrop options; some other physical backdrop options available.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
My fees and print costs are exceptionally reasonable making professional photography accessible for clients yet allowing me to cover my costs and continue investing in my business.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
First a phone consultation about the session, then setting a date. During this consultation we discuss locations, clothing, and other aspects related to the shoot. Then I work with the client to find an agreeable location/s unless they have already specified one. Before the shoot, I select props I think the client might want to use. Before we begin the shoot, I spend some time talking with the client about what they want to convey with their images, and also learning some more about them personally. When the shoot is completed, I explain what will happen now, and how I will contact them to view the finished images.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have a MPA in Public Administration from NC State. However, photography has always been a love of mine and a tool in my work. I have worked with marketing and photography professionally for over 30 years, and slowly photography began to become more prominent in my life. In 2010 I began being approached by online sports publications for permission to use my images. Then I was approached by a local newspaper sports editor about becoming a stringer for them which I readily agreed to. In addition to shooting for Mountain Media publications, I am also a PT sports/candid photographer for Shutterfly/Lifetouch, and I contract with other companies for other work. My photography has appeared in online publications, websites, other social media, brochures, calendars, magazines, and of course newspapers.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
It is a lifelong passion. It brings me great joy to bring joy to others through my photography work.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Individuals, college and high school seniors (incl. their parents), couples, businesses, animal owners, athletic teams & organizations, non-profit organizations, etc.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Recently I worked with two locations of a business that was re-branding itself. I was provided with guidelines, and also able to talk with a marketing consultant before conducting the two separate on-location shoots. The challenge was to photograph the employees working, meeting the new branding goals, make sure nothing was posed, and work under low light conditions. Some of each was indoors, some was outdoors. It was quite challenging, but it was enjoyable, and the goals were met. The business was pleased with the images from each shoot.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Don't just price shop-look for who is best for you and can accomplish what you need done for your photography needs.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Their budget; what they want as a final product/s; what boundaries or guidelines they can provide to the photographer to achieve their goals.
