I have 40 years of experience as a photographer and 25 professionally. My passion is to help you capture life's most beautiful moments! My main focus is on weddings but I also have a fully equipped downtown studio (with transportable lights to come to you). I’ve had the honor to capture over 150 weddings. Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

All prices for shoots are custom created so please ask but here is a very rough estimate. Location portrait shoots and business headshots usually come in at $120 Studio shoots with studio lighting are about $160. Weddings range from $500 for a 2 hour off season Wednesday to $2000 for an 8 hour July Saturday. Real Estate varies based on location from $150-250. Food and commercial product work averages $200. Other shoots need to be custom quoted. Please see for more information on what you get and don't get from a shoot. This is very important and these rules will apply to all shoots. Most importantly, if you have any questions, please ask!

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

My typical process really depends upon project. A lot of my work is in wedding photography and this is the arena which has the most options and requires the most personalisation. If the couple is local the ideal situation is for us to meet for a cup of coffee which comes with no obligation and which I will even buy! At this meeting we would talk over exactly what couple is looking for and decide if we are a good fit. I would then be able to provide a more exact bid. If the couple does not live locally such a meeting could be done over the telephone. The areas of photography that I do is a varied that the process is equally varied. Do, please just get in touch.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication from Herriott Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland along with a variety of other trade qualifications. I continually strive to better myself come by reading and working through tutorials online that help me continually improve my post processing skills.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

Interesting story! I REALLY wanted to be in a punk rock band but I soon recognised that I was too unmusical even for that! So I took up the camera as that would allow me to photograph the bands and hang out with all the cool people! I still love rock photography to this day.

What types of customers have you worked with?

I have worked with a very wide range of customers. I regularly do work for the Bellingham Herald particularly on their Dining Guide for which I do all the front cover and internal editorial photography. Other regular clients include Sustainable Connections, the Whatcom dispute resolution Centre and the Whatcom Humane Society. My main areas of work are weddings and real estate but I have also done many portrait shoots, children, commercial product shots and so on.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

In January of this year I traveled to Detroit and spent several memorable days photographing the blight on that city. This led to some amazing images of which I am very proud.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Make sure you find out how long the photographer will be with you, what system does he or she use to allow you to view the images after the event, what prints are included and whether they will provide digital images and if so at what resolution. What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

I think the most important thing, particularly considering the way the Thumbtack appears to be going, is to think long and hard before hiring the cheapest person who approaches you. Photography more than most professions is suffering from the rapidly dropping prices of fairly high-end equipment. This allows anybody to simply by an $800 digital camera and present themselves as a professional photographer making bids at perhaps half of what I am able to offer with my 30 years of experience and approximately $15,000 worth of camera and lighting equipment. So my main piece of advice is that the client should decide whether their wedding or other shoot is worth more than the gamble of saving a few hundred dollars. I genuinely fear that this race to the bottom is leading to a lot of unhappy brides and grooms which makes me sad.
