Introduction

Results -- In many cases, I've succeeded where others (including many other "name" instructors) have failed. "Teachers teach the way they've been taught," and my own academic background (Berklee, Duquesne University, Cincinnati College-Conservatory) has been both intensive and highly structured. I also believe that my training in music theory has given me an analytic edge in my teaching -- I'm very skilled in pinpointing physical/musical problems and plotting a structured path that works for the needs of the individual student. To this, I designed, implemented, and taught the program in Guitar performance at West Virginia University at both undergraduate and graduate levels (1994 through 2018). I'm currently a professor of Guitar at Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I've been a professor of guitar at five universities since 1994. Extensive performing history, including many years as first call guitarist with Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Musical Theatre, WV Public Theatre; touring experience with top 40, southern rock, and jazz ensembles; Diploma in Professional Music, Berklee; M.M., Music Theory, Duquesne University; Post Graduate studies in Music Theory, Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. My full resume is available upon request.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I was performing much more frequently until the COVID-19 pandemic. During that period, there was an enormous boom in guitar sales. Also, during that time, the theatres where I did most of my performances had been ordered to close. Thankfully, I began to receive many calls for guitar instruction, and it was a logical and natural transition from performing to full-time teaching.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Beginner through professional levels, I prefer those with a serious interest seeking a serious approach. Teens through retirees. All styles.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Too many to list, but... "First call" guitarist for Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, 2008-2018; Many years as guitarist for the Civic Light Opera, Pittsburgh Musical Theatre, and many other top tier performing organizations. Several years touring and local performing experience with rock and cover bands.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Many factors are important in selecting a teacher. Are they still active and respected as a performing musician? Do they have a track record of success with students? How extensive is their teaching history / credentials? Do you think that this particular instructor can address your unique interests or musical needs? Consider that a low rate "bargain" teacher might be a huge waste of time any money over the long haul, and make sure you have an instructor who seems to have a structured "path" for you.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
What are your musical goals/aspirations? Where do you want to be (musically) one year from now? Five years from now?
