Introduction

Teaching and sharing my love of music have been my passions for decades. I started teaching guitar lessons and touring with jazz/rock fusion band Entropy while in high school. I worked my way through graduate school reading shows, playing dance music, and concerts. I have directed concert bands, choirs, and orchestras in public schools. Instruction is positive-oriented and incorporates the latest scientific research into how people learn music. Columbia University, MA: Music Berklee College of Music BS: Music Instruction is individualized for each student's learning styles, experience, and goals. I teach my students the science of effective practice. Everyone can learn to play and improve their ears. My students learn the science of effective practice. Lessons are holistic, where my students understand and love music.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I put my heart and soul into every lesson. If you ever feel you have not received more than your money's worth, the lesson is on me. I offer discounts for students and seniors. If you are truly financially challenged, I will offer a sliding scale for sincere music students. I am especially interested in working with young children as I plant seeds for the future.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I find out what they want they know, what they want to to accomplish and develop a plan. We provide a well-rounded musical education that can change a student's life in ways they never imagined.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Masters Degree in Music and Music Education from Columbia University Jazz and contemporary music at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Studies with Pat Metheny, Lenny Frank, Bob Cunningham and others.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I was inspired by a great teacher who taught me how to work professionally as both a guitar and bass teacher. I worked my way through college playing and teaching music. I learned a great deal about teaching from him and wanted to teach music. However, I add ear training as a natural part of my lessons. It is something everyone should have from the start, and I was amazed at music college how much better my ear became.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I am a patient, positive oriented teacher. I individualize my lessons for each student. I teach holistic lessons. With beginners guitar players I emphasize songs, each with a lesson and gradually they learn to read music. Learning to read music is a great gift. Many students go on to learning classical guitar, but I teach all styles of music. I teach bass players how to create melodic funky bass parts and the elements of music. I also teach upright bass with either jazz or classical approach. I love to start new piano students. I ensure the student understands what they are doing. Finally, I give short pre-music lessons sessions to younger siblings of my students, introducing them to music to students as young as 3. We do fun songs, early ear, and rhythm training and learn basic concepts.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I have been teaching band, chorus and orchestra in local public schools. I recently served as the Concert Band Director in Point Arens in Mendocino County. While living in Davis, I played a lot of big band jazz gigs on both bass and guitar and I have been playing bass with the University of Davis Symphony. I love playing with them because we study and perform some of the newest and innovative pieces. These pieces make me think about things I never thought of thinking about.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
First, find a teacher who loves to teach. Some people love to teach, and I feel I'm planting seeds for the students' futures. Find someone who understands music's science and the neuroscience of learning music. I do. Ensure the teacher has successful teaching and performance experience. Credentials, an appropriate musical educational background, and a wide variety of performances are guides to selecting a teacher. Educational psychology is a valuable tool for any teacher. Teaching is as much an art as it is science. I bring both music and science to my lessons.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
While I am highly trained and certified, the most important thing is I love to teach. Columbia University, MA Music and Music Education Berklee College of Music: Guitar and bass performance. Studies with Pat Metheny, Lenny Frank on guitar and with Bob Cunningham on Upright Bass. Keyboard studies at Columbia University and Berklee College of Music.
