What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
We are a nonprofit organization, and we offer two main programs. The "Academy Program" offers private lessons on multiple instruments with a variety of teachers, who provide lessons in-person at our Facility in Berkeley, as well as in their private studios around the Bay Area. We also offer online lessons, but prefer local students so that students may attend our events in-person.
Each enrollment begins with a paid trial lesson to determine if it's a good fit. After that, students enroll for the term in a regular weekly timeslot.
The "Live Ensembles" program offers group classes as well as Saturday Ensembles. The group classes are for children, but the Saturday classes are open to all ages and levels. The price for this program remains consistent per class, and the term prices are based on the number of class dates offered per term.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Our enrollment coordinator works with each new potential student to align schedules, levels, instrument, and genre preferences. Each enrollment begins with a paid trial lesson to determine if it's a good fit. After that, students enroll for the term in a regular weekly timeslot.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Our instructors are experienced musicians with varying levels of college education, ranging from no college education to PhDs. Not all music genres thrive in a college setting, so we hire based on talent, experience, expertise, attitude, and creativity. We offer teacher training and internships, in addition to employment opportunities for highly educated professionals. This diversity enables us to reach a broader spectrum of learners and unite our community through our collective voices and experiences.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
We have a staff of creative individuals who share a love for music education.
What types of customers have you worked with?
We are a non-profit that has been offering classes for close to twenty years, and we have worked with students from all walks of life.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
After COVID, we created the "Live Ensembles" Program.
Our Orchestra and Jazz Band are mixed in age, level, and instrumentation, co-taught by two instructors and supported by multiple teaching assistants. This team collectively plays most instruments and can help customize the level and participation of each student. These larger ensembles are 2 hours each to build skills, work on repertoire, and prepare for performances. There are built-in break times to eat and socialize.
Brand new musicians start in our “Newbie Notes” classes as a pathway to the larger ensembles. Newbie Notes are classes for musicians who are brand new to their instruments and are offered in groups by age and instrument, with “The Littles” being our youngest group.
Musically Minded has a philosophy of “People first, Music Second,” meaning students may choose their instruments and genres outside the prescriptions of social and cultural norms. This opens up possibilities for students to receive support in discovering their personal artistry at the forefront and promotes a deeper commitment and learning for their chosen music path. We believe music thrives in healthy communities. Join and experience a safe space for students to learn while building social connections, a family-like atmosphere, and a welcoming, supportive community for each participant, embracing intergenerational scaffolded learning to meet differing skills and needs.
