Introduction

Hello! Thanks for your interest in taking drum lessons. Warren has 30+ years playing drums in and 20 years teaching experience under his proverbial belt. Although his focus has been the drum set the past 25 years, his foundation was in orchestral percussion and the rudiment heavy discipline of marching band. After moving to San Francisco in the fall of 1998, he quickly became part of a vibrant and diverse music community and honed his live chops gigging, touring and recording with artists such as Citay, Crime In Choir, Tussle, Kelley Stoltz, Daevid Allen, Carletta Sue Kay and 3 Leafs to name a few. Since 2002 he has taught drum lessons privately, and for institutions such as The Paul Green School of Rock, Vibo Music, Alma Music Academy, Live Oak elementary school, Children's Day elementary school and The San Francisco Project. As a teacher, Warren tries to cater to the individual needs of each student while focusing and good technique and the fun, expressive qualities of the drums. Sorry, but at this time I am not offering free trial lessons. That's how confident I am that you'll love working with me. :) Thanks!

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
In non-pandemic times, I teach out of a studio in the soma district of San Francisco, and for a little more $ can travel to you within the Bay Area(SF, Oakland and Berkeley) or do lessons over FaceTime. I charge $70 for an hour lesson, and $40 for a half hour at my studio in the Soma district and will come to you within San Francisco for an additional $10. If money is ever an issue, I'm happy to talk about that on a case by case basis.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I like to begin lessons with checking in, warming up and some basic drills before moving into beats etc. I encourage students to bring music they like, so we can dig in to the drum parts. Drum lessons can and should be different based on how someone learns, and their specific interests. Some people want a foundation of music reading, technique, and rudiments, while, others just want to play music with their pals on weekends. Both are valid!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I was in band(marching, orchestra and jazz band) through college and have played and toured in bands since 2000. I began teaching privately, with The School Of Rock and in elementary schools in 2003. My experience as a musician and teacher to kids and adults informs my teaching currently.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I taught a marching band drumline in the summer of 1998, but didn't start teaching drum set/snare drum professionally until 6 years later. It was something I always thought about, but it took teaching a friend to really get the ball rolling. I love teaching and sharing my passion for music, so it's a wonderful job for me!

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I have worked with students from age 5 to 55, with varying interests and experience as far as the instrument.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Don't be afraid to tell your teacher what you want to achieve. Ask questions. Time is precious, especially for adults, and not everyone needs to know everything. There are definitely ways to get a great foundation without knowing all of the 40 rudiments.

Is this really something that you will be able to commit some time to?
