Introduction

Hi, my name is Dave Cipriani. I have come to firmly believe that music is, or can be MEDICINE to heal our soul/mind/body. It is the way to release our pain - and our joy! - and to access deeper parts of ourselves that we may not be able to, or feel comfortable with, accessing in our everyday life. It is a way for us to connect with our hearts - and with other people’s hearts, to find solace, to find comfort, and to find our joy that we may be forgetting to connect with. It is a way to find wholeness and acceptance for our entire experience — good, bad & ugly, and I believe it can be a great force for change and good in the world. As I have progressed as a musician and a teacher, I have really loved watching my students connect with parts of themselves they had moved away from. It is truly beautiful! Now as for what I teach from a "technical" point of view, because I love the diversity of what I can teach, and I want you to know about it: I teach beginner to advanced (pro level) guitar, ukulele, beginner to intermediate piano, bass and vocals. For guitar, I can teach you how to read music, improvise in ANY style, strum chords, play beautiful classical guitar pieces, even write songs, compositions and lyrics. I work with Piano & voice students as beginners to intermediate, as help with songwriting, learning popular songs, etc. I’ve worked with students from 6 to 75, all levels, including students that are recording albums themselves. I have helped people find their creative spark to write instrumental pieces or songs (even a 9 year old!), to get past performance anxiety, or even to learn how to just sing in tune and find their voice. I teach most styles, including a few you probably haven’t heard of: jazz, rock, folk, classical, blues, African, Celtic/Irish, Balkan (Eastern European), and North Indian Classical. (If there is something you are interested in that’s not on the list, let me know, I can probably help!) I will work with you (or your child) to find a balance between fundamentals of good technical development and working on music that really will inspire you to practice. I often use concepts from Indian music in particular to teach melodic and rhythmic ideas that I think they have worked out the best - I always teach Indian rhythm if you want to learn to play Funk for example! I also teach Indian slide guitar (Mohan Vina), Indian music for western instruments, and basic Indian (raga) vocals. My basic rate is $100 per hour, $75 for 45 minutes and $50 for 30 minutes, but I also offer packages of 6 or more to reduce the rate, as well as I offer a sliding scale to those who are serious about lessons but can’t afford the full rate. I can do gift certificates if you are interested in buying for someone else. For the last year, i have done bi-annual Online Recitals, which will continue as I have students in several states and Brazil. For Payment, I accept Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, Cash and Check.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I can offer a sliding scale for those that are needing a discount, I also can offer packages and gift certificates.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I usually evaluated what they are interested in learning, making a list of songs they would like to learn and discussing skills they want to develop. Most beginner guitar students start the same, but we can quickly expand into pieces or songs that are closer to the student's goals.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started guitar lessons when i was 8 years old, began performing a little bit in high school, then started doing restaurants and concerts in college.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
It is extremely varied. I have transcribed rock, jazz, blues, fingerstyle, country, and African music solos and songs. I also teach Indian music both on instrument and singing, and have studied with several masters of this style. Because I studied music in India I use rhythm concepts from Indian music most of the time even for basic things, like playing funk guitar a la James Brown, a riff from the Cure or solo lines from anywhere. Besides standard jazz/blues/rock concepts of improvisation, I am often working with my advanced students on improvisation that use rhythmic concepts from India and Africa, as well as Eastern European(Gypsy) and Middle Eastern countries. I can teach more unusual rhythms from around the world like 7/8, 9/8 and more. I can work with unusual tunings as well: standard and dropped D, Open D or E, Open G or A. I play 20-string Indian slide guitar as well as 7 and 6 string guitar, so I teach slide guitar technique. But I enjoy teaching beginners as well! I have written arrangements of songs from recordings and music for students to learn. I love it when students bring me music or books that I have never heard before and is off the beaten track or contemporary. I usually work with teaching meditative concepts to all my students based on 25+ years of meditation training. This helps with such a variety of issues, it is quite amazing to me! I've seen it help with tension problems, concentration and performance anxiety, memorization and more. Because I have worked through some tendinitis and overuse issues by training in Yoga, Pilates and Feldenkrais method, I often incorporate concepts from them to assist in alignment, strengthening and relaxation.
