Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Our private lessons fee varies depending upon the experience and college level of the teacher and the length of the lesson. These lessons are customized to each student we include theory as part of the lesson curriculum. Lessons are paid a month in advance and all lesson fees are non-refundable. Books and/or other educational material needed (like flashcards, metronomes, sheet music, etc.) are not included in the lesson fee. Discounts: 10% off is student pays for 6 months in advance.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
If the student is a total beginner, I start with giving them an introduction to the piano. How it works, how the keys are named, etc. Then, I also get to know them to see what are their main goals with the lessons. We then take it from there and I customize their education depending on their age, level, interests, and goals. If the student has had previous lessons, I will listen to their playing, test their sight-reading skills, look at the books they brought, and then discuss with them my assessment of their playing. We will talk about their goals and I will let them know what I can do to help them achieve a higher level of playing. I will start assigning them materials based on our new goals.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have a Doctorate degree in Music from the University of California, Santa Barbara. I studied pedagogy and have taught beginning up to college level piano students. I also have a Master and Bachelor degrees in Music performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I also studied pedagogy at the Conservatory of Music with Peggy Salkind. I am also a composer and professional pianist who currently performs recitals and concerts. The other teachers at my studio have a minimum of a Bachelor Degree in Music and perform professionally with their own band or with other music groups.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
If you are a serious consumer looking to make an investment out of your music education, then our studio is for you. Some people choose a music studio based on the price, and it is my experience that you get what you pay for. Most of the time, when a student comes from another studio to mine I have to spend the first months trying to correct what was taught incorrectly! Do your homework and choose an experienced professional.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Parents and students should take in consideration how much time they have to practice the instrument. Learning a musical instrument requires daily practice and if the student is involved in too many extracurricular activities like soccer, basketball, gymnastics, etc. he/she may not have the time to practice. Music lessons without time to practice is frustrating for the student and the teacher, and a waste of money for the parents.
