Introduction

Hi! Hope you're having a nice day so far. I’m Peter Ko, a professional cellist based in San Diego. I’m currently a Doctoral Candidate at UC San Diego, where I study, perform, and teach full-time. As a cellist, have had the fortune of being a part of many special musical experiences, which have involved things like performing as a soloist with local orchestras, serving as principal cellist for the La Jolla Symphony, performing across the North American and European continents, and many other things. You can find more of my performer bio in my personal page As a teacher, I am dedicated to give my students the best instruction that they can get, with their own unique set of goals and circumstances in mind. I provide a thorough structure and understanding of what it means to play the cello, how to consistently create and develop a beautiful tone, and how to manage the learning process through considered and structured methods. My students have held top seats in their orchestras, have won auditions into esteemed music schools, summer festivals, and local youth orchestras. Beyond just learning to perform as a great cellist, my students also learn skills and concepts that can be applied more broadly in their daily lives, so that they can find success in whatever they do! Due to the nature of my academic work, I also work extensively as a writer, and have helped many students with their writing, at all levels including that of the university level. I can provide insight and ideas about how to improve one's writing process, as well as correcting and proofing one's writing as needed. Writing can be a difficult process but it can be intensely rewarding as the skill is developed, and I am more than happy to help that process along. Teaching is a very fulfilling experience for me; it is very satisfying for me to see my students grow and develop in positive ways, and to see them transform as individuals overall.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Time is money! The amount that I charge per lesson can seem a bit pricey; however, my fee reflects the quality of my teaching. You will progress faster under my guidance, with the proper technique, approach, and quality of craft. In the long run, this will save you time and money, so that you are minimizing the time you waste fruitlessly unlearning bad habits, or learning music with terribly inefficient methods.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have an Bachelor's and Master's in Music Performance (cello), which involved learning the instrument at a high level, and pedagogical training as it relates to music education. Currently I'm pursuing a Doctorate at UCSD.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started by helping out my friends with issues they were having with the cello or music, and my first formal students were young children at the beginning of their cello journey.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Children as young as 4, and adults as old as 75. Amateurs and aspiring pre-professionals.
