Introduction

I started Teaching Voice in 1985 while living in Glendale, Ca. In between Performing and Touring, I kept a small Studio of students. In 1996, we built a home in West Palmdale. In 2005 we built my Lancaster Studio, which opened its doors in January 2006 and did an Opening Night Event for the Cast of "Beauty and the Beast". I went from "3 to 50 Private Students" in less then 90 days. It has been constant ever since. Many students have gone on to professional vocal engagements, performing in different parts of the country and the world. Some hold recording contracts as well. Many of my students have received full scholarships to the University's of their choice. I've had 2 students with Producer Callbacks to The VOICE, one with a Lead Callback to Hamilton, one with a Callback for Evita (National Tour), two are the winners of the LPAC Scholarship, one currently in China with the Sound of Music Global Tour, one at Disney Tokyo, one attended NYU, five attended Berkley, one at Vanderbilt and numerous other prestigious Colleges. I enjoy watching a student come in with virtually no knowledge of how to sing properly and quickly learn how to implement the techniques I teach. Watching a student succeed is the pleasure I aim for. Success is achieved when "Preparation MEETS Opportunity".

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I offer a special price for a package of four consecutive lessons. It has been a popular way to study and move forward. $200.00 for 4 lessons

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
First I want to meet them and hear what their goals and dreams are regarding Singing. Then I have them sing, so I can see where they are vocally.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Just after High School I was offered a recording contract. I then headed to college and studied Applied Voice at KState. I moved to LA, where I studied privately with Carol Newbar, Keith Wyatt, Frank Fetta, but ultimately was lead to Georgio Tozzi. I did multiple shows in LA, acquiring my AEA card, performed for LA Music Center Opera (a special show with Dudley Moore) and began touring with Opera Ale'Carte with Richard Sheldon. I toured for 10 years.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started singing at 4 years and continued all through my schooling. After performing with numerous groups, recording, and then moving to Los Angeles, my college professor encouraged me to start teaching Voice. He arranged for students studying with me to receive college credit, as well as placing me on the adjudication board during the College mid terms and finals. Doing all of this prepared me for what I do today. The actual starting kick was when I visited a well-known private teacher as she taught a cabaret class. When I asked her if she was going to work with their voices, vs. just how to act on stage, she said NO! Sadly, there wasn't one well centered Voice in the entire class.. NOT ONE. I was shocked! I began to put my Studio Vocal & Performing Package together. End Result: The Donna "O" Studio. I build Vocalists and Performers!

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I work with students 4-84. I've worked with entire middle school show casts, as well as high school and college students. I've had the honor of teaching Teachers who sing as well. Because I've Directed local Community Theatre Productions, I have had many of the actors from the shows do lessons as well. Young kids, all the way to older folks, if they have a desire to sing, I will help them find Their Voice.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
The Studio was asked to perform for the annual Poppy Festival this past April. I was originally offered 3 , 1 hour performances..1 each day for the 3 days. The students had been preparing songs for their themes for a couple of months, as most Students build their books of music 1-2 songs at a time. The event changed their request to only 2 days but, 1 main stage hour performance and "8, 30 minute performances!" This change was offered to me "10 days" before the event. This gave my students the opportunity to Showcase their song books, and put their hard work into Performace! The crowds loved them! It proved to be a Great Success!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Keep in mind that all singers don't know how to translate their gift in a teaching situation. I've had other Teachers as my Students. At the end of the day, when I ask them why they are studying with me, they have consistently told me, "because you make it easy to understand and I'm able to build the techniques into the voice"!

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Why do I want to Sing? The answer to that question is Personal and a Directive for each person. Follow Your Dreams!
