Introduction

Located in South Austin, Nine Muses directs students on a path to becoming better musicians. My instruction includes vocal techniques, breath support, musicality, music theory, vocal pedagogy, sight reading, and performance techniques. Recitals throughout the year offer a chance for each student to practice performing for an audience, and also provide an opportunity for family and friends to celebrate their progress. Confidence in singing comes from learning the intricacies of your own voice: How it works, how to use it, how to control it, and knowing how to fix things that may go wrong. Once technique is learned, a singer begins to truly understand their voice and what they're capable of. Once they have control, they have confidence. Once they have confidence, they're ready for that solo, ready for that audition, and ready for that big performance in front of hundreds of people. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I offer 30, 45 or 60 minute lessons for $45, $60 and $75 per lesson. I offer discounts to students who pay for a bundle of lessons in advance: 4 30min/45min/60 min lessons are $160/$200/$260 when paid in advance.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

First I make my students feel absolutely comfortable. I want everyone using their best voice so I work towards shaking out all those nerves that can creep in, causing tension and sometimes fear. I next listen to their voice and try to point out all the strong, beautiful things they're already doing, followed up with ideas for how I can help them be stronger. Then we choose repertoire because, let's face it, the real fun is when you're singing the songs you truly love!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Bachelor of Music degree from Texas State University and a Master of Arts degree from Chapman University. I have been a member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) since 2010

How did you get started doing this type of work?

When I first taught a lesson I didn't even realize I was teaching. I was helping a college classmate with a piece she was working on for her senior recital. One passage was really hard for her, and she found me practicing one night and asked for help. I loved so much that I was able to help her! That's when I realized how exciting it was to be a teacher.

What types of customers have you worked with?

All types! Beginners to professionals. Students, actors, songwriters, guitar players, doctors, software developers, I could go on and on. So many different people can and love to sing!

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I recently worked for a few weeks on the HBO television show The Leftovers, working with a children's choir who performed during an intense and emotional scene. It was very exciting to be on set working with actors and young singers and providing the right ambiance for the moment in the story.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Shop around and attempt to meet with more than one voice teacher, or take a full first lesson with a few different teachers. Singing is emotional and personal and that must be felt in rehearsals. Singers must feel very comfortable in the studio with their instructor.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Instead of asking questions, I always suggest a trial lesson. You must meet, sing with and converse with a teacher to feel certain they are the right fit for you. The questions will come organically if you meet someone in person and start discussing your goals.
