Though the music teachers at McMusic Lessons are primarily classically-trained, as students of theory and composition, we study, write, perform, and teach in a variety of styles and genre. The music director, Kevin McClain has been playing rock, alternative, funk, jazz, improvisation, and formally studied music all throughout grade school, high school, and college. He received his associate's degree from Moraine Valley Community College where he studied Theory I - IV, classical piano, classical guitar, and played guitar in the Moraine Valley Jazz Band. He was recommended to the guitar and composition programs at DePaul University School of Music in Chicago, Illinois. His degree was left unfinished after moving to Fort Bragg North Carolina in support of his Wife and Her commitment to the United States military. He spent time teaching on base and began conducting online music lessons to maintain students in various locations.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I've been playing music ever since I can remember. Playing by ear in my earlier years and growing up on the music of Frank Zappa, Led Zepplin, and the Doors, I started to love sharing my discoveries with friends and family. As I matured musically, I played music in various amateur bands all through grade school and High School and began expanding my interests to jazz, classical, bluegrass, folk, and just about any new style I could find. By the time I was ready for college I was fascinated with theory and composition. I Majored in composition while I focused on techniques on the classical guitar, jazz guitar, piano, violin, and flute. I established McMusic Lessons & Performances in 2008

Also, I have performed solo, duet, and full band performances on the classical guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and piano for restaurants, banquets, parties, bars, clubs, festivals, and just about any kind of special events.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I am always writing, recording, learning, and performing music 24/7

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Make sure that your teacher has a strong foundation in theory and composition and pay special attention to technique and exercises. Learning the "why" behind the "how" invokes awareness and provokes further interest and creativity. Many teachers today tend to teach by a "monkey see monkey do" type of approach, which is necessary for some processes but in no way should be the overall method of learning any instrument.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
How much flexibility for rescheduling lessons. I recognize how busy schedules can become no matter how much planning is involved. Being a sole proprietor I am much more flexible than most, when it comes to rescheduling
