Introduction

My name is David. I've been teaching guitar and piano for over twenty years now. I'm classically trained in both with years spent studying with Douglas Niedt, Karen Kushner, and Christopher Madden, at the University of Missouri, Kansas City Conservatory. I've also studied jazz guitar with Jay EuDaly, Danny Embrey, and Stanton Kessler. I specialize in dealing with students for whom previous approaches to their instruments have yielded little to no progress but I also teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced students of all ages and from all backgrounds. My approach is laid back but I stress excellence with everything I do. Students learn their instrument in the context of real music and real musical understanding, not exercises or rote repetition. I have two studio locations: my home studio in Raytown, MO fifteen minutes from anywhere in the KC metro area, and my away studio in Blue Springs off the I-70 Highway.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Pricing as follows: 30 minute lesson: $25 45 minute lesson: $40 60 minute lesson: $50 No fees involved. I do teach from a curriculum which I may require you to purchase at some point during lessons. I do offer discounts for larger families with multiple students.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
The first thing that I do is to try to understand where a new student is coming from. This includes asking about their background with their instrument and music in general. Secondarily, I'm also interested in their goals and aspirations. What is it that brought them to me? Finally, I will evaluate their skill level and potential difficulties. From here I am able to ascertain a general direction in which to proceed.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
5 + years studying classical guitar with Douglas Niedt (UMKC) 10 + years studying jazz guitar/theory with Jay EuDaly/Danny Embrey/Stan Kessler. Studied classical piano with Tatev Amirlyan and Karen Kushner (UMKC) Studied classical piano with Christopher Madden (UMKC) 16 + years of experience in teaching and performing in the Kansas City area.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started teaching guitar in early 2004, after studying jazz guitar with Jay EuDaly and classical guitar with Douglas Niedt. After studying piano with Karen Kushner out of UMKC I taught guitar and piano out of a studio at Guitar Source in Overland Park, for Southland Conservatory in Raymore, and for the Music House in Leawood, Kansas.
