But what's more important is that I do what most tutors don't! I connect with my students, inspiring them to take ownership of their own learning. When I'm not tutoring I enjoy playing piano and watching anime! I worked at a center for traumatic brain injury kids for 7 years where I've encountered and overcame all sorts of barriers to learning. There I learned to think creatively outside the box in teaching and building understanding. As a substitute teacher; I've tutored groups of students to pass their NY ELA state test exam as well as other exam preparation. My favorite part of tutoring is when one of my students finally gains confidence in a previously frustrating concept. I show them that there is always a way! As a tutor, I also have extensive experience in math, ELA, science, and test prep such as SAT/ACT, SHSAT, ISEE, and others. I can provide testimonials where I helped to drastically increase test scores for many of my clients. At Creative Mind Society, once it's fun, it is not difficult! I'm also a classical pianist and have performed at several recitals. I do offer piano lessons as well as chess tutoring!

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

My price is $70-85/hour but I also provide discounts for package deals.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

After we schedule a phone call, we will schedule a first trial lesson to see if we are a good fit. Assuming all goes well, I will email you a contract for our agreement, per our conversation. Once it is reviewed and accepted, we will schedule our first contracted session; we will continue tutoring based on our agreement.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where I had to pass various math classes, among other subjects in order to graduate. I've also had 7 years of experience working with brain injury students as a Teacher Assistant, which prepared me with various effective methods of shattering learning barriers.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

I tutored for free for many years while I was in high school as well as college. To me helping others in the class was just something you did where I was from. It took me some time to realize that people will gladly pay for the knowledge that is in your head. After being laid off from Wall Street and going through a grueling summer of construction work, tutoring appeared, my savior! I started with an opportunity with Varsity Tutors and then soon started my own enterprise.

What types of customers have you worked with?

I've worked with various types of customers from kindergarteners learning to read, middle schoolers struggling with basic algebra, high school students wanting to score higher on college entrance tests, and adult learners needing to pass a test.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

Recently I worked with Amber Charter School for a period of 3 months in which we prepared 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to pass their state testing requirement for their grade. I was happy to find out that after the exam more than 85% of our students had passed. I was delighted!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Finding the right tutor is very personal. It is most important to develop a genuine connection, with a certain level of trust with him or her. Reliability and flexibility are usually a deal-breaker because it's important that they are consistent.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

What is the desired outcome that I would like to see my child achieve? How many hours will each session be? And how many times per week? Are there clearly defined outlines that need to be reached such as passing exams? What can I do to reinforce the session with my child, in support of the tutor?
