Introduction

Hey there! I'm a Boston-based drummer, producer/electronic musician, & music educator and have just about 20 years experience professionally performing & teaching music to all ages. Additionally, I was the recipient of the "Outstanding Youth Advocate Award" from Berklee College of Music's Community Outreach Dept. for teaching at the West End House Boys & Girls Club (Allston, MA). I've also taught at Indian Hill Music School (Littleton, MA, now Groton Hill Music Center in Groton, MA), Boston Public Schools' Counseling & Intervention Center (Roslindale, MA), the Mary Lyon Pilot High School (Brighton, MA), Somerville Public Schools (Somerville, MA), & have been teaching at the Boys+Girls Clubs in Leominster and Gardner (MA) since 2022. I've also given music production workshops at A3E, an international music production conference at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, MA as well as at music production schools in Istanbul, Turkey (Bilgi University & Galatasaray ITM) an electronic music festival in Guatemala (Cosmic Convergence), and in Wellington, New Zealand (at the Pyramid Club). I primarily do lessons via Google Meet & Microsoft Teams these days (with people from all around the country/world) which have been successful and effective - I've had students win multiple awards of excellent musicianship, & get accepted to Berklee (both as undergrad students as well as scholarships for summer programs). I graduated Berklee with Cum Laude honors and with a dual degree - Drum Performance and Electronic Production & Design. In addition to teaching, I have been frequently performing with bands around the U.S. and internationally. I've performed with internationally acclaimed artists including Nona Hendryx, Simon Shaheen, Richard Devine, Cappadonna (of Wu Tang Clan), Jim Belushi, & Juno Reactor. I've also performed in 11 countries over the past decade - USA, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Guatemala, Colombia, Ghana, Turkey, New Zealand, Poland, Greece, and will be performing at a festival in Hungary next month. I do my best to be a caring & thoughtful teacher, finding great joy out of seeing (and hearing) students build musical skills and sharing my knowledge with others. Each student is given a custom lesson plan to help maximize lessons and to help each student be the best musician he/she/they can be! Whether it be drum lessons, music production lessons, and/or music theory lessons, I strive to bring true professionalism and passion to each and every lesson/session!

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I like to first get a sense of the student’s and parent’s (where applicable) goals for the lessons. In addition, I like to know what type of music the student likes and what previous musical background he/she/they has. I then plan to work on building/refining foundation and show the many different techniques I've developed over the years to lead students to the highest level of success possible!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I took 5 years of piano lessons from age 7-12 at Indian Hill Music School, took 11 years of private drum lessons (pretty consistently on a weekly basis), and graduated Berklee College of Music Cum Laude honors with 2 degrees - one being Drum Performance, and the other being Electronic Production & Design. I've also been trained in music education/as a music teacher through my experiences at Indian Hill Music School (Littleton, MA), The West End House Boys & Girls Club (Allston, MA), the Boston Public Schools' Counseling & Intervention Center in Roslindale, MA, Mary Lyon Pilot High School (Brighton, MA), and Somerville Public Schools (Somerville, MA), as well as privately teaching for the past 15 years.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started playing piano when I was 7 years old as both my parents are amateur musicians and thought learning piano/music is an important part of life and human/child development. Then given my high energy, a constant need to keep rhythm, and after seeing a few concerts, I had a great desire to learn drums so I began drum lessons. I had a few friends at school that played guitar, sang, and played bass and subsequently formed my first band. I remember getting handed my first $20 from playing a concert, I was 14 years old at the time, and in that moment I decided I wanted to be a professional musician and haven’t looked back since. Around this same time, some of my friends who saw me playing wanted to learn as well so I started teaching them and have found great enjoyment in watching students build their musical skills ever since.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I have worked with many types of students from a large array of all different ages (from 5 years old to 95 years old), genders, and nationalities including some with learning disabilities.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
After working with a music production + music theory student for about 2 years, he got accepted to Berklee! Also, one of my drum students just played at a high school big band jazz competition. His band was selected to move on and play at the Hatch Shell in Boston and he won an award for excellent musicianship!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
- Be sure the teacher has a substantial resume of experience - Look for positive reviews - Look at how many hires the teacher has had (a great feature of Thumbtack!)

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
- What styles of music are of interest to learn? - What credentials/awards does the teacher have? - What are the short-term and/or long-term goals for the lessons?
