Introduction

My mission is to help you learn guitar. My lessons are drawn from 600+ free online lessons that I've created at Hub Guitar. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone else who takes teaching guitar more seriously, or who makes it more fun! I enjoy meeting wonderful people from all different places, and helping them connect with music that holds meaning to them, and discover a lifetime of truly enjoying music on a deep level.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
We charge a tuition rate each month which covers all lessons within the month. Students meet with their teacher once per week for 30 minutes.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
The first lesson begins with an assessment of the student's current skill, and their potential for guitar learning growth. If they don't have a guitar, one will be recommended based on their physique, stature, and musical preferences. If they do have one, it will be checked briefly for playability. The lesson ends with a plan for taking the student to the next level of playing ability as soon as possible–ideally within the coming 4-6 weeks.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
All of our teachers at Hub Guitar Boston are alumni of Berklee College of Music.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started teaching when I was still a student at Berklee, meeting students at Berklee classrooms after hours. This evolved into basically the only job I've ever had in my adult life. :)

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
We have helped coach guitar learners in a variety of situations: * Total beginners who have gone on to demonstrate a high level of skill and sophistication using our method * Advanced players who, with our help, have been admitted into top college-level music programs * Professional players (artists with record deals) who have incorporated our techniques to advance themselves professionally

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I had a student that wanted to get into Berklee, but he was starting from zero. I told him what he would need to do, that he would need to limit recreational activities, avoid video games, and seriously focus for 3-4 hours per day. After following my advice, he passed the audition just two years later. (Of course, I also work with beginners and amateurs, so this needn't be your own goal!)

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
1) Does the teacher have a method that they teach out of? At Boston Guitar Lessons, we created our own method. (See below). We did this because we wanted to have a high level of involvement with the student's growth. You don't necessarily need to hire a teacher that wrote their own method, but they should have a plan for your growth as a musician. Otherwise, what are you paying them for? 2) Is this a professional teacher or an amateur or somewhere in-between? The glut of unemployed college graduates has crowded the marketplace. One thing we do to convey a professional image is that we only teach at our professional private studio. We don't teach out of our house or garage. We feel that this conveys a high level of professionalism and helps students feel secure and comfortable. 3) Is the teacher trained as a musician or as a teacher? Believe it or not, there are a number of folks out there who would never be hired to teach music, but who have elected themselves to be music teachers by signing up for websites like this one. All of our teachers are graduates of top music programs, and have experience teaching.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

- How long has this person been teaching? - Is this person serious about, dedicated to, and passionate for teaching? - Is this person qualified to teach, based on education and experience?
