unfold fold
I determine the experience and musical interests of the student and select appropriate teaching materials. Piano lessons or music theory tutoring are provided one-on-one in my home studio located in Minnetonka, MN.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I received Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees in music from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I also hold the NationaIly Certified Teacher of Music in Piano credential (NCTM) from the Music Teachers National Association. Prior to starting my own independent studio, I taught in the music departments at Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Texas Woman's University.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Music is my lifelong passion. I have taught a wide variety of music courses for my entire career.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I have a love of teaching music and enjoy working with students of all levels and backgrounds including beginners.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Prior to retiring from Texas Woman's University I also served as a visiting evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the official accrediting agency of college-level music programs in the United States. This provided me the opportunity to visit other music institutions across the country and exposed me to a wide variety of teaching practices and strategies.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Check the credentials and experience of the instructor carefully. Ask for reviews from other students. Since piano lessons are usually provided on a one-on-one basis, it's crucial to find an instructor who can establish a productive and enjoyable working relationship with the student.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
What is the professional background of the instructor? What is the music background, if any, of the student? Why does the student want to study music? Does the student have access to a piano or keyboard for practice between lessons? Note that the lion's share of progress in playing piano is achieved through daily practice; the lessons themselves serve to provide information, guidance, and monitor the effectiveness of the student's daily practice regimen. Little progress is achieved without daily practice in between the lessons.
