Introduction

Music is a very personal and individual thing. Whether I'm teaching or performing, I try to tailor what I'm doing to your preferences. With teaching, I can come to you online wherever you live. I often teach multiple family members - sometimes whole families take lessons! The curriculum I use is designed around teaching the basics of playing and reading music, but with lots of choices and flexibility for each student. I hold recitals in people's homes- students get the experience of preparing a piece and performing, but in a more relaxed atmosphere. I also encourage participation in NYSSMA festivals for piano students and help students prepare well, so that they have a positive experience. With performing, I love to play music that moves people. I often take requests- it means so much to people to hear a song that they love. And I'm often told that my original songs are very meaningful- that I've really captured a feeling or a moment in time. To me, that's what it's all about. I am so very grateful that I get to do something that I love for my job! It's so rewarding- whether I'm helping a student learn a new concept, or watching someone's face light up when I play a song that they love. I bring a lot of joy to what I do, and that joy is reflected back to me.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Lessons are $30/half hour (a little extra if more travel is involved) plus the cost of books/music. Performances depend on the type of gig (wedding, party, bar/restaurant) and the length of time you want me to play. Custom songs for weddings, anniversaries, etc. start at $500, and include a simple recording. Prices for live performance of the song, or more elaborate recordings are negotiable.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Meet them and address their fears or concerns (some people are a little nervous.) Have them show me what they know, and talk about past experiences. Ask questions about what they want to accomplish.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
While I do not have a degree in music ( I was an education major, and then a business major in college,) I have over 20 years of teaching and performing experience.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I wrote my first song as a young child (3rd grade?) I started performing as a teenager at my church, singing in the choir and playing guitar. With teaching, I began with teaching a friend's daughter to play piano over 20 years ago. I was good at it, and really enjoyed working with kids. I got more students through word of mouth, and my business took off.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Teaching: I've worked with all ages- 3 year olds to mature adults. You're never too old to learn! Performing: I've played concerts and benefits, private parties and celebrations, in bars and restaurants, and for weddings and funerals. I've been hired to play just one song... or for 3-4 hours.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I was invited to a friend's wedding, and decided to write the couple a song as a wedding gift. When I decided to do it, the wedding was only two weeks away. I talked to them both briefly and then got to work! I played it for them the day before the ceremony, and they were so moved that they asked me to play it at the reception while they were cutting the cake. ("No One Like You")

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Meet the person before you commit to anything, ask for referrals and talk to people who have worked with this person.... and ask a lot of questions!
