Introduction

Drew Wesely is a musician, composer, producer, and audio engineer specializing in accelerated, and individualized pedagogy to maximize progress for serious students of all ages. Drew Wesely received their Masters of Music in Contemporary Improvisation from New England Conservatory and Bachelors of Music in Jazz and Improvisational Music from the University of Nevada Reno. They teach guitar, piano, songwriting, production, and composition with an emphasis on intuitive learning, ear training, and music theory. Their background includes jazz, classical, rock, blues, reggae, R&B, hip-hop, electronic music, and improvised music. As an educator they have over 15 years of experience in private studio and has given workshops at the middle school, high school, and college level including work through the Boston Philharmonic, The New School, Arts for Arts, and University of Nevada, Reno. Drew approaches each student as an individual with their own goals, needs, experience level, and learning style to create a specialized curriculum that helps propel the student towards their best self and enjoy the process at the same time. I genuinely love connecting with students through music to help them reach their personal goals. I believe that my approach towards learning music is deeply rewarding, engaging, and aids brain development.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
My pricing is based on extensive professional experience as a performer and educator as well as my qualifications: Masters of Music from New England Conservatory.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
When meeting a new student I like to get to know them personally and establish goals early on. As we work together, I guide each student towards the best version of themselves with repertoire, ear training, music theory, technique, and composition assignments appropriate for their age, ability level, and stylistic preferences. I recommend 45min weekly lessons for beginners and 60min lessons for intermediate or advanced students as well as 20min/60min daily practice respectively. Lessons are laid back and focused on developing muscle memory and musical intuition through lots of playing.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Masters of Music - Contemporary Improvisation - New England Conservatory Bachelors of Music - Jazz and Improvisational music - University of Nevada, Reno

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Music has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. As a child I listened to my father play guitar every day (he was a very accomplished classically trained player) and my mother play piano. I started taking lessons when I was five and quickly became interested in composing and improvising. Eventually I was introduced to jazz and made a living improvising and gigging in many different genres and contexts. In 2015 I moved to Boston to deepen my practice by studying with some of the best musicians in the world at New England Conservatory and then moved Brooklyn, NY to pursue a career as a musician and teacher.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I teach all ages and styles. My experience includes teaching students as young as preschool through adult.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I worked with many amazing and talented students at my last position as a guitar and piano instructor at Onset School of Music and am very proud of the progress they made over the past 2 years.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Seek someone with deep knowledge and experience in music to teach you. Hiring an inexperienced or undereducated teacher can result in years of misinformation and frustration.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
What is your experience level? What are your aspirations with music? e.g. professional/hobby/etc. What types of music do you like? What types of music do you want to play?
