Introduction

Welcome! I'm Jessy, a professional pianist and educator in South Austin. I help students (age 6+) become well-rounded, independent, and thoughtful musicians - and provide performance and creative opportunities along the way. A teacher since 2019, I am a lifelong musician + learner and received my Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas at Austin. I'm a member of the Music Teachers National Association and the Austin District Music Teachers Association.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Payment for the whole month is due the first of the month, with a grace period extending to the first lesson of the month if you pay by cash or check. I provide materials and charge for reimbursement as they are supplied to you, or in will instruct customers how to purchase their own materials. Please inquire directly for rates. I do not charge a recital or participation fee.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I like to have a short video call to meet the student (and parent if applicable), discuss my teaching methods and policies, and go over any questions. From there potential students can think about lessons or go ahead and sign up!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I learned how to teach piano through the guidance of international pedagogue, pianist, and University of Texas Professor Sophia Gilmson as well as jazz pianist, educator, and director Dan Redner. This is in addition to drawing from my own experience as a musician and teacher. A teacher since 2019, I am a member of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and the Austin District Music Teachers Association (ADMTA).

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started my journey as an educator in the last year earning of my music degree and business minor at UT Austin. Many musicians find themselves teaching as simply a way to generate income, but I quickly found it to be something I was passionate about.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
All sorts! I've taught students as young as 4 years old and as old as retired age. I work with beginners and transfer students. Lessons are not genre-specific, but most of my students play classical, pop, rock and all will learn how to read music at some level.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
In November 2024 my students performed in a bi-annual recital. While the recital is one afternoon, we spend several weeks preparing music. Before the recital we meet for an informal masterclass/dress rehearsal as a chance to run through the performance and get feedback. It’s also a way to meet other students and build community!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Find someone who respects your time, money, and is professional. Don’t assume that being an experienced musician translates directly to being an effective educator. They are both skills that must be nurtured.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Does the student have (or is able to obtain) a well-maintained instrument? If not, I am always happy to help find one with the student. Does the student have a quiet place and time to practice? For parents of young students: are you able to observe lessons and help guide daily practice sessions (with help from the teacher)? Are your expectations realistic? Pogress happens through regular practice, so keep in mind that learning an instrument is a daily commitment.
