Introduction

Let me introduce myself. A voice teacher for over thirty-five years, I concentrate on healthy vocal production, breath support, and tension issues. My students, from beginners to Metropolitan Opera professionals, have studied opera, musical theater, gospel, country, and pop. For 26 years, I directed the Musical Theater and Opera programs at HCC-Northwest College. A member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, my Master of Music degree is in Vocal Performance and Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance. I have worked as musical director/conductor or collaborative pianist with Houston Grand Opera, Opera in the Heights, Des Moines Metro Opera, Opera in the Ozarks, American Institute of Musical Studies, Graz , Austria, Harrower Opera Festival, and EaDo Opera. Musical theater credits include TUTS (Theater Under The Stars), Stageworks, Queensbury Theater, and Upstage Theater, among others. Thumbtack has rated me a Top Pro for 2015, 2016, and 2017. Let me help you on your vocal journey! Lucy Hargis I love people and enjoy seeing the progress a student makes as time goes by. It's very satisfying.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I charge $60 an hour, $50 for 45 minutes, and $35 for half hour lessons.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I assess the level of the student, and together we work out a plan to achieve their goals.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I continue to work professionally as a collaborative pianist and church musician. I'm active in various LinkedIn groups to keep abreast of new ideas. I'm also active in the NATS organization as both a voice teacher and collaborative pianist. I enjoy keeping up with several blogs of internationally renowned voice teacher colleagues for any new concepts or teaching theories.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I was destined to be a musician from birth. My parents were both classically trained pianists and played two-piano arrangements around the state. In an opera rehearsal when I was assisting the conductor in the pit I realized that I could Not NOT do music for my life! It is a difficult career but so rewarding and FUN!

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I take a student where he is and help him to improve and move forward. We prepare for upcoming performances and auditions, concentrating the most appropriate repertoire for each situation. This is true for piano and voice.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Last May I was one of three vocal coaches and pianists working at the Harrower Opera Festival at Georgia State University in Atlanta. We presented two productions in three weeks: The Tales of Hoffmann and Street Scene. It is a program for young singers wanting experience in opera. I'll be returning 2014 for the upcoming season. In September ,2014, I was in the HFAC production of NUNSENSE. I played piano in the onstage band and was Sister Lucy!! Much fun.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Music as a profession requires great commitment and time. It is important to "hone your craft" and not just take for granted that talent will always win out. There are many talented people who have fallen by the wayside because someone less talented worked harder and put in the necessary time to ensure success.
