Introduction

I maintain a flexibility of approach, patience, and wide range of experiences so that each lesson best fits your evolving learning style, pace, interests, and goals. Lessons available in Seattle (University District) and Issaquah (near Gilman Village). I find joy in adapting lessons to each student's unique and ever-changing progress through music learning -- whether piano, trumpet, or theory.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
New students (rates valid up to five lessons) $60.00 / hour $45.00 / 45-min $30.00 / 30-min

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
For children and adolescents Parents and I meet to go over studio policies and answer questions, and we'll also schedule a time for an initial, free lesson with your child or teen. Once ongoing lessons begin, our first 3-5 are primarily exploratory, by which time they'll have taken on a shape and pace appropriate to your child. For adults You and I meet to go over studio policies, answer questions, and engage in a free 20 - 30 minute sample lesson, as time allows. Once lessons begin, our first 3-5 are generally exploratory, eventually taking on content and pacing that fits your interests and goals.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I hold a bachelor's degree in music with emphasis on piano from the UW, and I am the assistant editor for Perspectives of New Music, the leading peer-reviewed journal of contemporary music theory. In addition, I have significant experience performing and recording on trumpet, including jazz and classical study at the Oberlin Conservatory. I have sung in numerous vocal groups, including The Esoterics and The Seattle Choral Company, as well as community musical theater productions. I've been teaching since 2004.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
My dad started playing piano with me when I was two, and at five I began lessons. Eventually I studied at the Oberlin conservatory, and earned a bachelor's degree in music from the UW. I began a transition from student to teacher in 2003, and here I am.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Current and past students have been ages 4 to 83. They've never before encountered a keyboard, been self taught, had some previous lessons, and been lifelong pianists. They've spoken very little English. They've been interested in playing familiar music, improvising, learning music theory, and refining their technique both beginning and advanced. Some have been ambitious or excited, some shy or anxious, or burdened by negative past musical experience. They've had difficulty sitting still or vision impairments or arthritis. Please note that my Issaquah location is wheelchair accessible, but my Seattle location is not.
