Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
My legal fees for a Revocable Trust Plan of $ 995.00 for a Married Couple and $ 795.00 for a Single Person is for a "simple" estate plan, very limited amount of sub-trusts and does not include Medicaid/Asset Protection and for estates that require estate tax planning.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
a. Estate Planning Questionnaire completed by you and reviewed by me. b. Payment of Retainer Fee (50% of entire amount to be paid). c. Face to face meeting, preferably via Zoom, to discuss your estate planning goals. d. Preparing all the Estate Planning Documents. e. Final meeting with you in your home to execute your estate planning documents, (days, evenings, and weekends) where you will invite two (2) witnesses who must be over 18 years of age and not a beneficiary under the estate planning documentation. • Deed into Trust: Deed to transfer real estate to trust (additional fees for more than one deed and any addition cost for recording a deed for property outside of Illinois). • Funding Other Assets: You will be responsible for “funding your other titled assets (bank, brokerage and market accounts, stocks, bonds and mutual funds) and regarding beneficiaries with respect to insurance, retirement plans and annuities.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I received a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from Southern Illinois University. I worked for a Title Insurance Company for 11 years. I ran my own law firm for the rest of my career practicing real estate law and estate planning.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
After passing the Illinois State Bar, I was hired by an Illinois Title Insurance Company and stayed there for 11 years. I have practice estate planning law since I became a licensed attorney.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I work with Clients who are at different stages in their lives. Like many people, my Clients "put off" actually completing an estate plan. Most of my Clients have no estate planning at all. Living without an estate plan puts your loved ones at risk of spending much more time and money to close your estate than is needed.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
A recent Client had no estate plan, and therefore no plan for who would become guardian for their minor children and who would manage their children's inheritance. An elderly married couple wanted to make the transfer of their wealth to their children easy upon the last of them to die. They obtained a "peace of mind" when I completed the plan for them.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Have you heard the saying "Shoulda, coulda, woulda"? We complete an estate plan to secure the procedure our children must follow upon our deaths. Don't wait to do this until it's too late. Your estate plan in easily amendable in the future. Complete your estate plan now and your children will thank you for it later.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Does this attorney specialize in estate planning? Can/will the attorney give me a written estimate showing me all the actual costs I can expect to pay to complete my estate plan? What is the timeline to complete my estate plan? Can/will the attorney describe all the services that are included in the legal fees I am paying him/her? Is this attorney easy to talk to and approachable so that I will not be uneasy about contacting him/her with a question or concern? What are all the estate planning documents included in the estate plan I am paying to have completed?
