Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Based on whether you need estate planning (preparation of documents such as Wills) or estate administration (probate) I charge a reasonable flat fee rather than an hourly fee. I will quickly provide you with a free skype or phone consultation and a retainer that outlines how we have agreed to work together. Only one half of the legal fee is due contemporaneously when you sign a retainer; the other half is due once the project ends. Discounts may be given on a case by case basis.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I always provide a free telephone consultation for prospective clients, follow that with an estate planning questionnaire and then provide tailored estate planning documents and/or petitions to the client via a shared folder. Next, I consult with the client and answer all his questions patiently. Lastly, I finalize any documents required and arrange to meet for the document signing ceremony which I provide for free and can arrange to meet the client at a place of his or her choosing. When this ceremony ends, I provide these documents to the client, along with providing ancillary instructions on how to keep them operative and current.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Tons. After graduating from Yale University with a B.A. in literature, I worked as a paralegal at a major law firm in New York and then traveled to Japan where I lived and worked while earning my M.A. in Japanese literature. Once I returned to the States, I worked again as a paralegal with a view towards entering law school, where my focus area was trusts & estates planning. Once I graduated from law school and after being admitted to the NY bar, I worked for domestic and international law firms before opening my law office in January of last year.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I grew extremely interested in how the law functions to accommodate how people want to provide inheritances for their loved ones. Once I started working in this field, however, I grew to learn how trusts and estates is truly a unique field of law because it encompasses so many different field in the law (corporate, real estate, tax) and allows me to help my clients during emotionally fraught times as well as happy times. Regardless of when clients contact me, I look at each client's estate planning objectives carefully and am honored that they welcome me into their homes and share this very personal family information with me. It is something that I never take lightly.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I've worked with single professionals, young and established families, and elderly persons and widows/widowers. In addition, I have worked with wealthy clients and average income clients, each of whom I treat exactly the same.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I was recently appointed as a trustee of a multi-million dollar trust where I was required to consult with and disburse funds to many different counsel. The trust was settled last year and I have been able to vigorously invest the funds.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
It is critical that the customer carefully choose the right trusts & estates practitioner because he or she must be fully proficient in tax matters, drafting and client intake in order to properly advise the client. I am highly experienced in all areas of estate planning and administration, including certain estate litigation matters.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Whom do you want to provide for? How do you want to provide for your loved ones? What kind of tax/non-tax objectives do you need to take into account for your estate plan? What is your full financial picture? How are your financial documents titled on beneficiary forms? Do you have a former estate plan in place that needs to be reviewed?
