Introduction

Urrutia Design is an award winning boutique residential design firm located in Sausalito and designing homes in the greater Bay Area, and beyond (we are relatively new to Thumbtack). We've been designing homes since 1998 with a primary focus on larger remodels and additions. However, we also provide design services for other projects like new construction, as well as kitchen and bathroom remodels, landscaping, permit submittal sets and applications, and of course, full interior design services. Please contact us if you would like to discuss your project or learn about how we can best help you. We'd be happy to speak with you!

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
We have flexible pricing. That is, we can either charge on a set fee or work by the hour. Most clients like to pay for a complete design and/or submittal. Others might just want to consult with us. We are happy to help in either way.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
We begin with a call to learn about the client's project wishlist and timing. We'll discuss our process and availability as well. Once we determine the scope of work, we'll put together pricing for your project and hope to move forward with you on your home renovation.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I (Jason Urrutia) owned a company called Urrutia Development and developed residential homes from 1998 through 2011. Most of these developments included either major additions to the home or were newly built homes altogether. All of the projects included complete home renovations. Working for myself in the home development industry gave me insight into all facets and costs of home projects. It's really allowed me to help our current clients in a way that most architects or designers are not able to do. In 2011, I started a second company, Urrutia Design. This company was focused solely on helping others with their own home renovations that include entire home design projects, additions to homes, kitchen and bath remodels, landscape design, obtaining planning and building department approval and permits, etc.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I've always been drawn to architecture and design. I purchased a beautiful Victorian triplex in Sausalito in the late nineties and began re-designing each of the units and really fell in love with the process, rewards and results. It became very clear to me how important it is to have the right home environment as we spend so much of our time based in and around our homes.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
We work with many different people in many different areas and economic levels. No job is too small or too big. We love helping all clients with their homes.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
We recently took on a Phase II of a project in Marin County. We had originally remodeled all of the interior except the primary bedroom and primary closet. In Phase II we remodeled both of these spaces, as well as adding new floors, some furnishings, and an outdoor shower with water feature.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
It's really important to get the right team around you helping you with your renovation. Having the right designer/architect and contractor can make a project so much easier and fun as you move through all of the different phases. And a lot of that can be sorted out with initial meetings and client referrals. Beyond that, the most important part of the project is the first portion, the Conceptual Design with Project Valuation. This is where we provide different initial design options... proposed floor plans, exterior elevations, etc. to give the client an idea of different concepts for their home. We also collaborate with a contractor to give the client important information related to their budget as these concepts will have different pricing related to each design.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
What is my realistic budget? What is my wishlist? When is the best time for me to begin my project?
