Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Custom homes and Remodeling are by their very nature, one of a kind. As such, each job price is based upon the labor, materials, hard costs and supervision necessary to achieve the customer's desired results.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
The initial contact is typically an email, followed by a phone call to get familiar and discuss a Site visit. Once the scope of work is discussed it will become apparent which resources will be needed to move forward with an estimate. Items such as plans, specifications, surveys etc help to define what is desired and the parameters which are available. Once a budget and a proposal are ready, it will be presented to the customer for approval. Then, scheduling, permitting, and other pre-construction work will begin. If a permit is required, then construction will begin shortly after all permitting is completed. The project will then be run in a manner that achieves the best results most efficiently until the project is completed. Of course, my desire is to achieve meaningful progress each workday.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Although I have several years of University, I have learned everything I know about construction by doing it myself. I have worked as a carpenter, handyman, Remodeler and finally Homebuilder. I have expertise in High Performance building techniques, Building science, energy efficiency and storm resistance.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I have always enjoyed building and fixing things.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Homeowners are of all backgrounds and personalities and I have worked with them all. Some simply want a great result and others want to know the details, too.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
A particular custom home I built for a young family was especially rewarding as I got to know the family and help them to realize their dream home. I even participated in the lot selection, became acquainted with their new neighbors and introduced them to a few maintenance contractors. The actual building process took 12 months due to the size and complexity of the project.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Trust, but verify your contractor. The rapport and relationship with the contractor is important and will lead to a smoother job. Communication is vital. Make sure that your contractor will be respectful of your time, resources, property and family. And have an attorney review the contract before signing.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
What is the feeling of the project that you desire at completion. Find photos that can communicate those feelings, even if they are not exactly accurate and literal. Will your contractor help you when you are having a hard time making selections and other decisions. How will the project be managed and supervised. Will the site be kept tidy. Will the contractor and subcontractors be "good neighbors" while they are working on your project. What is the timeframe to expect for a reply when you have a question. How many projects do you run at a time.
