Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
We always give free consultation and estimates. While it is sometimes possible to give a potential number by phone, it is always better to see the project in person to give an accurate appraisal.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
After an initial phone conversation, we meet at the job site to get the details of the project and evaluate the space. After I've seen everything, I return to the office to design the plan and put together a proposal. That is e-mailed to the client who then evaluates it, asks any questions and then we meet again to sign a contract and schedule the work.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
On the job training since I was 17. Working with painters, carpenters, plumbers, electricians etc. I've always had an insatiable appetite to learn new skills.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I spent years learning the trades as a chemist, QC supervisor, building maintenance and then working for other contractors. I started my company in 1990 and expanded into full remodeling in 1994. I was a board member and ultimately President of the Fox Valley Remodelors Council.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Everyone from single older retirees to young couples in their first home.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
We recently enclosed a loft area to create a new bedroom for a returning college student. Replaced everything from floor to ceiling and made it tie in seamlessly with the rest of the house. It took about 10 days. (including repainting all the common areas of the house)

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Start with a list of wants and needs. Then, pare down the list to worst case scenario, so you know the bare minimum that you want to accomplish. Then check your budget to be sure you can manage financially. THEN call me. We can look at the space, your lists and see what can be done fitting your budget. Before hiring anyone, be sure that you are comfortable with them. This is a long term relationship and you don't want to be uneasy with your contractor.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
What do I want? What do I need? How much am I willing to spend to get it? Will I be in the house long enough to enjoy it?
