What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

We are competitively priced. We work with our clients to help educate them regarding the costs involved in their project. Once they establish their budget, we help the appropriately allocate funds to the different parts of their project (ie. electrician, plumber, tile work, drywall, painting). We make every effort to work within the clients budget.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

We do a short phone conversation to get basic details of the project to make sure we can help them and set an appointment for an initial in-home consultation. During the initial consultation, we discuss the scope of work, budget, timeframe, and take some basic measurements to help us develop an estimate. Once the estimate has been reviewed and the clients have chosen to work with us, they approve the initial estimate. We take a down payment and move to the Design Phase, in which material selections are made. The chosen materials are added to the estimate and costs adjusted. The clients then review the estimate again and either make changes or approve. From there, materials are ordered and construction is scheduled to start.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

We are always striving to keep up with new things in our industry. In addition to the state required continuing education, we take advantage of as many opportunities for further education with product and skills training with many of our vendor partners.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

Remodeling and design, is something I've been interested in since I was a child, helping my father remodel my childhood home--he gave me a small roller and let me paint the inside of a closet! When I was at a crossroads in life after my divorce, I decided to work with my friend and mentor on a house flip. Shortly thereafter, I met my husband and business partner Shawn. My friend encouraged me to get my Contractor's license. Shawn and I shared a passion for flipping and remodeling. Red Door was opened in 2017 and we've been at it ever since!

What types of customers have you worked with?

We have worked with all types of clients. From single parents on a strict budget to clients who wanted the high quality custom work done. We have resources for all budgets.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

We recently completed a complete garage remodel for clients who own a historic log cabin/lodge on the St. Croix River. They wanted the garage to look like it belonged with the lodge, not an afterthought. We found significant rot to the frame that had to be addressed before we could address the other issues and the cosmetics of the project. We sourced the same fieldstone that was on the lodge to add to the garage. We added new, insulated, vintage look doors, all new cedar siding, a new composite cedar shake looking roof, and sourced vintage look hardware and lighting to complete the transformation. This project took approximately 7 weeks to complete. The clients were thrilled with the results!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

After you do your own due diligence and narrow down who you may want to work with, it's very important you have a face to face conversation. You should make sure you're on the same page with communication. Knowing how you both communicate best, how often the client needs/wants project updates, etc. is very important. Communication can make or break a project.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

It's always helpful if a client has a preliminary budget number in mind. Clients should not only consider budgetary questions (down payment amount, payment schedule, etc), but whether or not they need outside financing. They should also consider the disruption to their daily schedule and what the professional can do to help lessen the impact of construction (what hours will they work, contractor access, a plan for makeshift kitchen or making sure other arrangements have been, etc)
