What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Because of Covid and customers not wanting construction workers in their homes, we are offering a 10% discount on all deck construction during the months of December and January. We will get your deck ready for the Spring time use. Working outside allows us to keep our face to face interactions extremely limited.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I visit the home and listen to their project ideas. We tour the space and discuss all the options and possibilities that we can come up with together. I try to give rough estimates on the first visit to give them an idea. If they're wanting to go further, then designs are drawn and the budget gets much more specific. Very low pressure and no sales. Just a casual conversation really. I try to answer every question homeowners have.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Although I have a degree in Psychology, my passion is building and remodeling. My dad taught me a lot about remodeling. I flipped a home last year and did almost all of the labor and trades work myself. I taught myself a lot through trial and error.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

My dad would pay my brother and I to pick up discarded nails. I thought it was an important job that required a great amount of focus. I thought they must be reusing all the nails that I'd painstakingly foraged. Obviously, that was not the case. A coffee can full of bent nails isn't worth very much. But that's how I got my start in the construction industry.

What types of customers have you worked with?

I have worked with very low budgets and truly unlimited budgets. I believe you can still take less expensive material and install it in such a way as to make it look beautiful. I tend to believe the budget just impacts the size of the project, not the quality.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

We recently extended a dining room and created a large patio area. It turned out beautiful! We added french doors and two large windows bringing in a ton of sunlight. It changed the small space into something that's so inviting, I'm very proud of it!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

I would simply say to go with your gut. People tend to know within a few minutes of meeting someone if they like them or not. I would ask difficult questions to test their knowledge and also see how well they're listening to you. If you feel heard, understood, and your gut says OK. Then I say go for it!

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

I like customers to dream big. Their task is to dream of something that's awesome and worth their time and money. Having a builder in your home for weeks or months is no easy task. It can be emotional and expensive. So the project should be worth the hassle. Dream big and let your contractor play the wise critic and help you design something amazing and reasonable for your budget and space. It can be an enjoyable process to see your home change into something you've been envisioning.
