Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
We are very competitively priced as we have much less overhead than most because we don’t hire salespeople to price our jobs so there’s no commissions to pay. We were forced to close up the shop due to Covid & now work from home for the first time in over 35 years & this also keeps our overhead to a minimum. We offer discounts to our heroes (military veterans or active duty,, first-responders, police & fire workers & teachers). There is no sales tax added to services. There will never be additional fees or charges that have not been discussed at the time the price/proposal is given.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I will usually ask a few questions and depending on those answers determine if I can give a price from there or if we need to go take a look at the project site and leave a written proposal there at the time. Our price quotes, whether in-home or over the phone, are always no cost and no obligation - definitely no high pressure sales tactics here. We give the client the price and information and let them decide on their time if they’d like to do business with us. We don’t use salesmen so we pay no commission on sales - just Donn or myself giving pricing info. Donn is on every single job ensuring the client gets what was proposed and we never have additional charges or fees added to a job unless a client asks for more work to be done.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have now over 30 years in the business myself along with my husband’s over 45 years in the roofing & insulation industry, I believe we are best qualified to help lower your utility bills and keep your home or business quiet & in the comfort zone without spending crazy amounts of money that you’ll never see a pay-off.on. Because we run the company much more efficiently than most, our overhead is much lower than our competitors & we don’t feel like we need to make all the month’s money on one job like some of these companies who are charging two-four (yes 4) times more than we do. We know what it takes to make it right & we do what we say we will do.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Donn has been doing this since ‘75, so I have the best teacher. I began working for Donn at Moore’s Roofing & Insulation in 93 & absolutely loved being a female in the industry - I became the insulation manager & it was my job to know all I could about the different products and applications available. After two decades, I ended up marrying into the family. Then around 2018-2019 (due to unforeseen circumstances) we had to let Moore’s go & close our doors . That’s when Donn & I started Harper’s Insulation so we could continue to take care of our fellow Okie’s. We wanted our name in it instead of the city where we began so it would be easier for customers to remember us. Lipscomb doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue & since insulation is what I know, we decided to go with my maiden name instead (I’m a Harper-Lipscomb).. And Harper’s was born.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
All types of customers, all different socio-economical & geographical differences, from single-wide mobile homes, man-caves & she-sheds, to multi story mansions, apartment complexes and businesses. We work with homeowners, business owners, renters, property managers, builders & general contractors. Typically the average job is re-insulating existing homes for homeowners & tenants looking to save their energy dollars. We do this by adding insulation to the attic areas as well as the walls.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Doing the insulation to the exterior walls of a previous customer’s house where we had done the attic a couple years earlier. It took all day since it was lathe & plaster (6-8 hours - we are exceptionally careful not to.crack the plaster) and was in the 90’s by the time we got started that day. It took all I had but was bound and determined to finish that day as we said we would. By the time we finished it was over 100° outside but the air conditioner only came on twice the whole time there & only before having about 1/3 of job complete. After that (even with hose running through the front door) it began to maintain the temperature & didn’t need to run anymore. That is quite satisfying & rewarding knowing what we do makes a difference and saves people money & makes their special space more comfortable & quieter now.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Check them out with the Better Business Bureau as well as different review sites. While it’s impossible to please every person (no matter how hard we try) don’t let one bad review keep you from looking further into doing business with a company. We have always believed people need & often deserve second chances and try to always give a hand up where we can & when we can. We believe we are all on equal ground under the cross & the only mistakes are ones you don’t learn from - so really, they aren’t mistakes, they’re life lessons. And the last is no matter what ‘it’ is, this too shall pass😊

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
If they’re doing business in Oklahoma City, make sure the company is a licensed insulation contractor (we have no such state license requirements). What are the different products available for your specific project - (different materials perform differently in many situations and there are usually more than one material or application available for your project) - which is best for your needs? Does the company offer a green solution? Are insect & rodent resistant materials right for your project? Is the company accredited with the Better Business Bureau? Does the company have references &/or referrals? Are there any rebates available? Educate yourself (on the difference in materials) as best as possible beforehand & don’t be afraid to call back & ask more questions.
